To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, CHARLES A. RIVABD, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Engrave ing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates useful improvements in chine, and it has for its to certain new and anengraving maprimary aim and object to provide a machine by which may be produced a roll forrolling metal wire that is much used for ornamental purposes. A machine of this character by which such rolls may be produced has been a long manufacturing trade, and itis, therefore, another object to provide a mechanism of a practical nature which will be efficient in the production and formation of rolls for the rolling of metal wire. Further, the invention resides in the features of construction and arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafterdescribed in detail and claimed in a succinct manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein tionsi being broken away,-

Referring more particularly to the drawin s, the-numeral 1 designates the bed or body of the machine provided with spaced airs of bearings 2 in which are journaled the shafts 3 and 4, the pattern shaft 3 being extended to carry a drive gear 5 which derives its source of power from any well known and desired form of transmission,

7 The beam. 11, is pivotally mounted at one end on a fulcrum plate'12 for relative horizontal movement, vertical movement being permitted through the shaft13 which carries the plate and is journaled in bearings 14 on the frame or bed 1. Vertical adjustment is accorded the beam by the adjustably mounted bracket arm 15 that extends outwardly from the bed beneath the beam, the latter having a roller bearing 16 running over the arm. 'A raising and lowering screw 17' is provided for adjusting the relative height of the arm and beam.
The foregoing construction is that of the well known French engraving machine which is described and illustrated in the French patent to V. Janvier, No. 320,564, and which further includes a tracer 18, opposite the pattern shaft 3, and the milling cutter 19, opposite the work shaft 4, both being carried on the beam, as is clearly illustrated. The milling cutter is rotated by means'of an endless belt 20 passing about the pulley 21, on the cutter shaft, and the several idlers 22, a suitable take-up 23 being provided at the pivot end of the beam.
In the French patent above referred to, a face plate was mounted on the outer or front end of each shaft 3 and 4, one plate carrying the pattern and the other bearing the die blank to be cut. a
A beveled gear 24 is substituted for each face plate and with each gear 24 is intermeshed a horizontally disposed and downwardly facing gear 25, the same being fixed on the lower end of a vertical shaft 26 which is journaled in the overhanging bearing 27 of a bracket 28. This bracket has spaced supportingwebs which seat on the bearings 2 of the respective pair and are secured thereto by the screw bolts 29.
