Be it known that I, ANDREW J. OLIVER, a` citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to lifting jacks of the type comprisinga supporting standard, a lifting bar, and lever-actuated mechanism for raising and lowering said bar; and the general object of the inventionl is to provide a very practical'and eiiicient jack. y
A more specific object of the invention is to provide improved raising and lowering mechanism which is of very simple andyet durable construction and the operation of which isfeasy and positive.
' KThe objects of the invention thus generv'ally'sta'ted are attained by the construction and arrangement set Vforth in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1v is a side elevation of the improved jack.y Fig. 2 is a top plan view, with parts in section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig, 4 is a fragmental side elevation lon an enlarged scale showing a portion of the operating mechanism. The jack comprises a. standard 1, a rack bar 2 slidably mountedv therein, a pinion 3 meshing with the rack bar, a lever 4 having a spring-controlled actuating member 5 shiftable into and out of operative engagement with said pinion, and a holding member 6 for the rack bar having a pivoted controlling weight 7 said holding member being adapted to be engaged by the member 5 at the end of the upward movement'of the lever. v Y
The standard l, having a supportingbase 8, is made hollow to receive the rack bar 2 and at its forward edge is enlarged as at,9 to house the actuating mechanism for the rack bar. At its opposite or rearward edge the standard is provided with a vertical slot 10 in which a lifting shoe 11 on the rack bar is adapted to operate; and the upper end of the standard is fianged as at 12 to form a guide for the rack bar 2, which is in the form of an eye beam, and to form a stop against which the transverse pin 13 is adapted to engage to limit the upward movement of the rack bar. n i

The holding member 6 for the rack bar is pivoted in the standard 1 above the pinion 3 on a pin 22. Said member is provided with a projecting Iportion or detent 6a extending upwardly through an opening 23 in the upper end of the standard and a projecting portion or finger 6* extending rear wardly through the opening 17 in the rear edge of the standard. A jack including a standard, a rack-bar slidably mounted in said standard, a pinion meshing with the rack-bar, means for actuating the pinion to raise or lower the rackbar, and a holding member having a pivoted arm adapted to hold said member either in or out of engagement with said rack-bar, said member being adapted in one position of said arm to permit an upward movement of the rack-bar and to hold it against downward movement, and in another position of said arm to permit a downward movement of the rack-bar.

In combination with a jack having a standard, a rack bar slidably mounted in said standard, a lever mounted on a fixed pivot in said standard, a pinion, an actuating member yieldingly held either in or out of engagement with said pinion, and a holding member yieldingly held either in or out of engagement with said rack bar, said actuating member and said holding member being adapted to coperatively engage with the pinion and rack bar respectively in the operation of said lever to effect a raising of the rack bar and with the pinion and rack bar respectively and each other in the operation of said lever to automatically effect a lowering of said rack bar.
