CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedOct. 15, 1918.
Application filed May 13, 1918. Serial No. 234,275.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN THING- GAARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clasps, and particularly to improvements in clasps which are ordinarily applied to garments.
An object of the invention is to provide clasp elements with integral portions permitting permanent attachment of the elements to the fabric of the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide the elements of the clasp with studs which may be inserted in suitable openings made for this purpose in the garment from one side, and which may be flared after in sertion so as to prevent withdrawal of the clasp element after insertion.
Another object of the invention is to provide clasp elements with portions which will facilitate the location of said elements with respect to certain parts of the garment and which thereby facilitate proper registration of the elements when it is desiredto bring the same into closing position.
With these and other objects in view an embodiment of the invention has been described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein V Figure 1 shows a portion of a garment with the clasp attached thereto;
Fig, Qshows on a larger scale the fastening portion of a garment clasp element;
Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the clasp elements;
Fig. 4.- is a longitudinal central section through the same detached;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the same clasp element combined with the fabric portion to which said element has been permanently secured;
Fig. 6 is a front view of the companion clasp element; 7 V
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section through the same clasp element detached, and
Fig. 8 shows the end section of this clasp attached to a portion of a garment.
The clasp, including a catch 1 and a hook 2, preferably is made of sheet metal, each of these elements being provided with lugs 3 from which hollow studs or rivet stems 4 project, preferably in a direction away from the main portion of the clasp element.
These hollow stems or studs 4 may be inserted into the body of the fabric after the same has been provided with suitable holes, and the portion of the stem projecting from the opposite surface of the garment-may then be bent over outwardly as shown at 5 so as to split the projecting flange in a number of places and forming a head, which will prevent the withdrawal of the clasp element from the garment into which it has been inserted. The formation of these flared flange portions or the head 5 on the opposite side of the garment may be attained by suitable punches or other pressing tools of known or approved construction, not shown.
For the purpose of facilitating the location of these clasp elements, each of the elements is provided with a marking portion deviating in its shape slightly from the adjacent portion of the clasp. From Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6, for instance, it will be seen that one of the edges of the clasp 1 has a notch 9, and in securing this clasp element to the garment the notch 9 may be brought into a position in which it overlies a well defined portion of the garment, as, for instance, the seam 10, near the upper edge of the trousers to which this clasp is shown applied in the present instance.
A similar marking portion or notch 11 is provided on the companion clasp element 2, and 'if this portion is also brought into a position in which it overlies a part of the seam 10 it, is obvious that the two clasp elements 1 and 2 can be brought to closing position without disturbing the fit of the garment.
I claim: fine the proper location of one element with 10 A garment clasp consisting of catch and the other and With respect to a predeterhook elements, lugs formed on the opposite mined portion of the garment. ends of said elements and having integral In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 rivets in connection therewith, adapted to in the presence of two Witnesses. r
