Be it known that I, WINFRED MATTHEW- MAN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Morrgarth Cottage, Ingleton, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements inl Eyes for Dolls or Toys, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in eyes for dolls or which are capable of being applied to toys, rings, pins, advertisement purposes or the like. My object is to arrange and construct an eye having a moving lid or lids arranged in such a manner that on the movement of the doll or object carrying the eye or person carrying the same depends the eEect produced. The effect is what I term a winking one, after the manner described in my specification of British Letters Patent No. 19,905/13 and in addition the eye itself is so mounted as to move under the iniiuence of motion from side to side. This movement will be a gradual one and to obtain the eEect it is not necessary to move the article carrying the eyes over suddenlyin one direction or the other as has been the case with glancing eyes heretofore proposed.

In describing my invention in detail reference is made to the accompanying sheet of drawings similar letters indicating similar parts in which- Figure 1 represents a part sectional elevation of an eye adapted to move from side to side, said eye having moving lids.

Fig. 2 represents a sectional plan of the device shown in Fig. 1 the upper lid being removed.

Fig. 3 is a view showing in rear elevation the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

To carry my invention into eil'ect referring to Figs. 1 and 2 I provide an eye ball E of any suitable material and the eye ball is carried on a pivoted arm E pivoted to the pin or framework P carrying the lids and all may be inclosed in a suitable frame, such as a dolls head, pin frame, or other suitable carrying means such as a containing socket. As shown in Fig. 2, the frame P is suitably bent or curved to allow the eye to turn sidewise or .moved from side to side, and pivoted at or about the outer ends P are the lids L and L land the frame l? is suitably attached to or carried from the framework carrying the device, a portion F being shown in Fig. l. The arm E before referred to is provided with a slot or like E2 (Fig. 2) in which may work a substantially vertical rod C adapted to swing,

to the rod C.

The weight WV may move toward or from the eye in lthe slot E2 and from side to side moving thereby the arm E and eye E, and on the amount of movement given to the weight by means of oscillation, vibration, or otherwise, will depend the movement of the lids and eye ball, the latter only moving from side to side and not rolling as has heretofore been proposed. lower lid L being coupled to the rod C nearer its pivot at the topl than the upper lid which is connected by link L1 toward the weight W, the movement of the upper lid consequent on the movement of the weighty and rod C will be greater or faster than the lower one and a natural eect is produced. This device may be used singly 0r in duplicate as desired.

yI may use eyeballs of any suitable material or pattern and provide eye lashes or representations thereof as desired. In some `cases I may employ glass or transparent eyes and provide light in connection therewith and thereby give eEect to the device at night. The device may be used on vehicles or be connected with other devices for advertisement purposes, or as toys, pins, mascots, or the like.

lIn some instances instead of employing a metal moving eyelid I may employ merely a frame to which will be attached flexible material, such material being fixed on the inside of the dolls head or like and to the eyelid frame and be extended or withdrawn or contracted as the lids are operated under the infiuence of movement.

What I claim is 1. An eye for dolls, toys or the like, comprising a supporting frame, an eyeball pivotally mounted in the frame, movable eyelids associated with the eyeball, a gravityactuated weight movably mounted in the frame, and means for transmitting movement from the weight to both the eyeball and the eyelids.
