Be it known that I, SAMUEL LAw'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanket-Measures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to measuring devices and more particularly to a measuring attachment for weaving machines or looms.

The invention has for its principal object to provide a measuring device that will indicate certain predetermined lengths of woven material as it passes from the loom so that the proper length of the woven material may be indicated on'the material for facilitating accurate cutting of uniform lengt-hs.

A further object of the invention is to provide a Vmeasuring device that will be especially useful in properly measuring blankets woven on a loom and indicating thereon the point at which the Vborder blanket is to be woven so that all of the blanket in a length of material will be of proper length and the borders will be properly positioned.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a blanket measure which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the -rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description ofthe invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;

Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a weaving machine or loom showing the attachment applied thereto.

Fig. 2 is a section under line 2.2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, the frame designated generally at A is a part of the ordinary loom or weaving machine and includes the shelf Band supporting standard C at the front of the machine and iu front of which the operator or loom tender stands when the machine is in operation. A take up roller at D is mounted on the frame and as indicated at Fig. 1 of the drawings, the end of the roller is journaled in the upright C and as indicated vby dotted lines, the woven material passes over the shelf B and around the roller D.

The roller journal carries a sprocket 1 over which a chain 2 is passed. Mounted upon the frame is a bracket 3 which includes the upright 4 projecting vertically above the shelf B and carrying a stud 5. A pulley wheel 6 is mounted upon the stud 5 and is adapted to freely rotate upon the same. This pulley-6 has side flanges which form an annular lgroove for the recept-ion of the chain The chain also passes around take-up pulleys and 8, shown to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Each of these take-up pulleys is mounted upon a stud 9 carried by the upright standard C. the latter being provided with convenient slots 12 for the reception of the stud 9 in each pulley. The end of each stud is provided with a fastening nut for the purpose of holding the stud in adjusted position in the slot 12 In this manner the pulleys and 8 may be adjusted with respect to each other for the purpose of taking up slack in the chain lor for increasing or decreasing the length of the same.

The ordinary blanket woven on looms of this character measures 103 inches in length and, therefore, a sufficient number of links will be provided in the chain 2 to form a chain of a length equal to the length lof the ordinary blanket. The chain, therefore, will have made a complete passage around the pulleys and sprocket as each blanket-length passes over the shelf from the weaving machine. I

When a border for the blanket or different color material is to be provided in the blanket it is necessary to stop the machine while the operator makes the necessary adjustments for changing the filling to the desired color for indicating the border. For this purpose I have marked certain of the links in the chain by making them of a different color from the other links, for instance red. This will indicate to the operator the place at which the machine is to stop for the purpose of changing filling to insert the border in the blanket. Attached to the stud 5 is a finger 13 which is bent to project over the pulley 6 above the immediate center thereof, and this finger will indicate the place at which the machine is to stop; the operator continually watching for the red link to appear beneath the finger whereupon it will be necessary to place the border in the blanket. Since the border usually consists of material of a different color in the form of two or more lines across the blanket, I have provided two links in red indicated at 10 and these may be relatively closed together and any desired number may be provided. Y

When a blanket of longer length is to be wov-en a chain with a greater number of links will be mounted on the device, the rollers 7 and 8 being adjusted to take up any slack that might occur. For a shorter blanket the links ofthe chain will be decreased in number and the rollers 7 and v8 adjusted accordingly.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple'and durable blanket measure has been provided, and the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to .be understood, however', that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In a measuring device for looms, the combination with a frame and a roller mounted thereon, a'flexible chain, means carried bythe roller and engageable with the chain to impart motion to the chain when the roller is actuated, means rotatably mounted on the frame and receiving a Vportion of the chain to expose the latter in view of the operator, and rollers adjustably mounted on the frame and engageable with the` said chain and adapted for relative movement toward and away from veach other to tighten or'slacken the said chain.
