WRENCH. I
Specification of Letterslatcnt.
` Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Application filed January 29, 1918. v Serial No. 214,352.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, STANLEY HRYSAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and has special reference to an improved form of combination monkey and pipe wrench.
One important object of the invention is to improve andsimplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel form of monkey or nut wrench having detachable pipe wrench jaws.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a wrench having a shank 10 and handle 11. On the upper end of said shank 10 is a fixed jaw 12 while there is slidably mounted on the shank a movable jaw 13, the adjustment of the movable jaw being effected by the usual screw 14. The parts just described are those common in ordinary nut wrenches of the Coes type. Considering now the improvements of this wrench over the ordinary type it will be seen that the movable jaw 13 is provided on opposite sides with slots 15 and that these slots are provided with notches 16 and recesses 17. At 18 is a pipe jaw having op positely disposed arms 19 provided at their extremities with lugs 20 which engage, when the pipe jaw is in position, in the notches 16. Moreover, the arms 19 are of such length that they project slightly into the recesses 17. Thus this aw 18 can be readily attached to the movable jaw 13 by simply slipping it into position whereupon the lug 20 will lock the jaw firmly in such position. When it is desired to remove this jaw it is merely necessary to insert the point of a tool such as a screw driver in the respective recess 17 and pry the arms 19 apart so that the lugs 20 may be disengaged from the notches 16.
In addition to this the shank 10 has at its outer end a slot 21 which opens at the end and also at the side away from the fixed jaw 12. Inconnection with this slot there is provided a pipe jaw 22 having a shank 23 fitting in the slot 21 and detachably connected to the shank 10 by a screw pin 24. This shank 23 fits loosely in the slot 21 and the jaw 22 is normally urged in the direction of the jaw 18 by means of a leaf spring 25 fixed to the jaw 12 and bearing against the jaw 22. Now it will be understood that the jaw 22 can also be detached from the shank 10 by simply removing the pin 24 and withdrawing the shank 23 from the slot 21.
In operation when the jaws 18, and 22 are in position the adjustment of the pipe Wrench will be effected in precisely the same manner as the adjustment of the jaws 12 and 13.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form am] nnnstruction ,of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-
1. The combination with a wrench havin a shank and movable and fixed jaws, sald fixed jaw being provided with slots on its opposite sides having notches adjacent their inner ends; of a pipe jaw having a pair of arms fitting within said slots and provided with lugs engaging in said notches, and a second pipe jaw detachably connected to said shank.
2. In a wrench of the class described, a shank having a jaw slidable thereon and a Second j avv yoked to the first j avv to embrace last-mentioned pipe' jaw lovelrhangng the the shank and extend from its opposite sides, second j avv, and a spring causing the lastsad shank being provided With a slotn its 1 mentionedjavvv` to* fol'lov'v'the second jaw- 10 extremity and opening through the side of during the movements of adjustment of the 5 the shank toward the second jaw, means to latter.
adjust v the sldable j avvs and a ppenjavv Y In testimony whereof I affix myV sdivgnjatule.
having a shank pvoted Within said slot,v the STANLEY H'RYSAK.-
