Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 30, 1916. Serial No. 123,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. HAVEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blanchard, in the county of McClain and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to jacks, and more particularly to a lever operated jack.
The invention has for its principal aim and object to provide a novel jack including a stationary section and a movable section, novel means being provided on the stationary section for adjusting the movable sec tion.
As an additional object, the invention consists in the provision of novel means on the movable section adapted for engagement with an object such as a wheel hub whereby when the operating means is acutated the movable section is raised to consequently raise the wheel hub.
A more specific object of the resent invention embraces the provision of means for slidably connecting the sections to each other.
Among the other aims and objects of the present invention may be recited the promsion of the device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low, and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and-arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the detalled description below which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawlngs forming a part hereof, wherein I disclose a preferred embodiment of the invention for the purpose of illustration.
Broadly stated the invention cons1sts of a novel jack the stationary section of wh1ch is at times raised by means of the addltional jack until the movable section engages a wheel hub whereupon the operated means on the stationary section is actuated to raise the wheel hub.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which Figure 1 is a side elevation,

Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2 in the direction in which the arrows point, and
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2 in the direction in which the arrows point.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings I provide my improved jack which consists of a stationary section designated in its entirety by the numeral 1 and including a base portion 9. having sides 3 extending from the respective ends thereof and in spaced relation with each other, the outer edges of the sides having flanges 4 projecting from the adjacent inner faces thereof while the bottom adjacent the flanges is provided with an opening 5. Another section designated in its entirety by the numeral 6 is slidably associated with the stationary section 1. In the present instance the adjustable section 6 has the sides thereof reduced and provided with vertically extending grooves 7, the outer edges of the reduced portion being incidentally serrated to provide teeth 8 for a purpose that will presently appear. The flanges 4t and the grooves 7 serve as a means for slidably connectinothe stationary and adjustable sections and when these parts are arranged in engagement with each other the teeth 8 will be arranged so as to move through the opening 5 as is apparent upon reference to Fig. 2. A projection 9 extends from the outer face of the adjustable section 6 at the lower end thereof while a flange 10 is formed on the upper surface of the projection 9 adjacent the outer end thereof. The upper surface of the projection 9 is curved ai'cuately to provide a substantial recess 11 while the upper surface of the flange 10 is also provided with a recess 12 said recesses serving to accommodate an object, such as an automobile wheel hub in a manner that will presently appear.
'With a view toward providing suitable means for acutating the movable section 6 with respect to the stationary section 1 I have provided an operating handle 13 the inner end of which is pivoted by means of a suit able fastening pin 14: between the sides 8 of section 1. The upper surface of the inner end of the lever 13 is provided with spaced recesses 15 and 16. Pivotally mounted within these recesses by means of suitable fastening devices 17 are the reduced ends 18 of pawls 19 and 20 the latter of which is the longer of the two While the outer ends of both are arranged to engage the teeth 8 on the section 6. Coil springs 21 have their respective ends connected to the pawls 19 and 20 and two transverse pins 22 in the sides 3. In Fig. l of the accompanying drawings I have illustrated another jack which may be and preferably is of a similar construction as the jack just described or any other conventional form and in the present instance may.
be said to consist of a stationary section 23 which includes the ground engaging base 24:. Adjustably associated with the stationary section is a movable section 25 adapted to be raised by operating the lever 26.
The operation of the invention may be reviewed as follows The small ack is arranged to receive the base 2 of the main section and by operating the handle 26 the section 25 is raised to consequently raise both of the sections of the jack forming this invention. This operation is stopped when the projection 9 and flange 10 engage the hub of a wheel. The handle 13 is now engaged and first pulled upwardly so that the pawls19 and 20 which are held in engagement with the teeth 8 by the springs 21 will raise the sections 6. As the lever is rocked about its pivot the pawls by a step by step movement will raise the section 6 to a desired height and incidentally will lift the hub of the wheel. It is to be also appreciated that my invention can be used to raise the wheels of an oil well drilling machine, the section 1 being supported on a suitable support so that the wheels of the machine (not shown) which are adapted to rest in the recesses in the projection 9 and flange 10, if rotated will not upset the jack as would be ordinarily the case in the usual type of jacks.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I and a movable section slidably carried by the stationary section, a second plurality of slidably connected sections carried by the movable section of the first plurality, the second plurality having one of its sections adapted to move independently of the slidable section of the first plurality.

A jack, which comprises'a plurality of slidably connected sections, one of which is maintained relatively stationary as a sup porting member, means for moving and adjusting the other and movable section relative tothe stationary section, said means also serving to retain the movable section after movement and adjustment, a second plurality of sections carried by the movable section, said second plurality being composed of slidably connected sections, one of which is capable of being moved independently of the other sections, the other section of the second plurality being relatively stationary except for movement imparted thereto by the movable section of the first plurality, load engaging means carried by the independently movable section, and means for moving'said latter section.
4. A jack, which comprises a plurality of slidably connected sections, one of the sections being adapted to serve as a supporting member and provided with means for moving the connected slidable section, said latter section being provided at its upper end with a supporting and attaching surface, a second plurality of sections slidably connectd together, one of said sections having a rib T-shaped in cross-section, and the other sectionhaving a Tgshaped slot for slidably receiving the rib, said ribbed section being independently movable with respect to the other section and to the sections of the first plurality, means for moving the independently movable section, the relatively station ary section of the second plurality being carried by the supporting and attaching surface of the movable section of the first 'plurality, the means for moving said latter section serving to move the second plurality of sections upon movement of said movable section.
