TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. Ennn- HARE and CLARENCE G. ARvIosoN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in typewritin machines and more particularly to means orshifting the ribbon operating mechanism,the object of the present invention being to provide readily accessible manually operable means for shifting the ribbon operating mechanism to change the direction of travel of the ribbon.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a typewriting machine showing anembodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view showing the manually operable shifting means and the retaining device, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
1 represents a portion of the main frame of the machine and 2 an inner frame which carries the operating mechanism.
Ribbon reels 3 are located above the top of the frame 1 and may be protected by a cover 4. The ribbon reels are mounted on vertical shafts mounted in suitable bushings in the framework, and to the lower ends of these shafts, horizontally disposed beveled gears 5 are secured.
A horizontal actuating shaft 6 is mounted near its respective ends in suitable bushings 7 carried by the side walls of the frame 2 so as to be capable of rotating and also sliding longitudinally in said bushings.
Sleeves 8 are secured to the shaft 6 and to the inner ends of these sleeves, beveled pinions 9, 9 are secured and intended to be moved into mesh with the gears 5,-the two sleeves and pinions being spaced apart on the shaft by a sleeve 10 fastened to said shaft. Thus it will be seen that the shaft 6, sleeves 8 and 10 and pinions 9 form a fixed unit which may slide in the bushings 7, to cause one of the pinions to move out of mesh with its gear wheel and the other pinion to move into mesh with its gear Wheel.
The intermediate-sleeve is provided with an annular flange 11 having a beveled peripheral portion 12 to be engaged by the beveled tooth 13 of a retaining member 14 so as to hold one or the other of the beveled pinions in mesh with its gear wheel while the other pinion is out of mesh with its gear wheel. The retaining member 14; is pivotally mounted between the depending arms of a bracket 15 secured under the top of frame 2 and the toothed end of said retaining member is retained in operative relation to the beveled flange of wheel 11 by means of a spring 15*,-the tension of which may beadjusted by means of a screw 16 passing through the top of the frame 2.
A flanged bushing 17 is secured at its upper end in an opening in the top of frame 2 and serves as a bearing for a vertical shaft 18. This shaft is prevented from upward displacement by means of a flange 19 thereon which engages the lower end of the bushin and downward displacement of said sha is prevented by a nut 20 screwed on a threaded portion 21 of the shaft and hearing upon the upper end of the bushing.
The lower end of the shaft 18 carries a bifurcated arm 22 which is horizontall disposed and embraces the flange 12 carried by the sleeve 10 on the shaft 6. To provide a simple and efficient means for effecting attachment of the bifurcated arm 22 to the shaft 18, the lower end of said shaft may be slotted to receive an upwardly projecting shank 23 on said arm, and a rivet 24 passes transversely through the shaft and through said shank.
The shaft18 passes through an opening 25 in the main frame 1 and through a suitable opening in the cover 4, its upper end being provided with a lmurled knob 26 to permit it to be turned manually.
It is apparent that by turning the knob 26 in one direction or other, the bifurcated arm 22 will be moved laterally and, by cooperation with the annular flange 11, will cause the shaft 6 to be moved longitudinally to move one of the pinions out of mesh with its gear 5 and move the other pinion into mesh with its gear,thus causing reversal of direction of the travel of the ribbon.
Suitable means under the control of the key lever mechanism will be employed to turn the shaft 6 to effect the operation of the ribbon feed mechanism,--such for instance as that shown and described in our application Serial N o. 132,845.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence We do not Wish to restrict ourselves to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with framework and a shiftable ribbonoperating shaft provided with an annular beveled flange, of a manually operable rotatable shaft mounted in the framework, a bi furcated arm at the lower end of said shaft and embracing said beveled flange, and a spring-pressed retainer pivoted to the framework and having a beveled end engaging said beveled flange.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with framework, ribbon reels and gears connected with said ribbon reels, of shiftable pinions to mesh with said gears, an annular flange having a beveled peripheral portion, movable with said pinions, manu-' ally operable means cooperating with said annular flange for shifting said pinions, a pivoted retainer having a beveled tooth co operating with the beveled peripheral portion of said flange, and an adjustable spring engaging said retainer.
