cleats, from which a fol'dable bxblank of desired dimensions may .be produced by the assembly of the required number of individual sections, the assembly` resulting in a stiffening or reinforcement ofthe Alongitudinal corners of the completed box.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. Figure l1 isha` perspective view of the completed box; Fig. 2 a trans verse section, in a plane' parallel witliwth'e removable ends, the end sheet being'b'rb'lt'en away at its corners to show the relation of the several cleats; Fig. 3 a plan of a series of four separate sections 'prior to their 'assemblage in foldablelblan'k form; Fig. 4 'a similar view showing the 'sections fastened together and one series of cleats turiied up into foldable relationship; Fig, 5 a section, on a larger scale, on line 5, 5 vof Fig. 4E; Fig. 6 a perspectivevvi'ew of a slightl rhodr fiedl form of completed pacl'gage, tje portions of the sheets being' broken away yto show parts which would bel-otherwise hidden; Fig. 7 a fragmentary section o'f the modification shown in Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 a plan of a slightly modified boX-for'mii'ig section embodying my invention. y
In the drawings, 10 indicates the main sheet of one of my boX sections of 'material which is capable of being bent along desired fold lines,- such, for instance, as ber board, corrugated board, other lsuitable paper products, etc. The size of each sheet 10 will be determined by the dimensions of the boX desired and at each side edge it will be provided with a flap 11, a fold line 12 being formed, by scoring, pressing or otherwise, to facilitate, if that is necessary, the folding of the aps 11 to positions at an angle to sheet 10. Two cleats 13, 13 are attached to sheet 10 in such manner that, when several sections are brought together and foldeda the said cleats will interengage P rammed4 inependenuyend may, therefore,

The? may f I astenner' iyiii'g epe n my ele@ be eaeehea te the main body 'ofthe 'adjacent section, ,but iiithatcase special scoring at the'fold linev `ofthe intern-aligning Hap 11 muet be resorted to in or-'dier to compensate for the thickness of the material 'at'the -fold line or corner of the completed package.
The production of the individual boxforming se'etiois considerably facilitates... manufacture and ultimate production of packages of various sizes, and the overlap# ping of the Haps l1 upon the adjacent bodies l0 produces a double thickness 0f material at the longitudinal edges 0f the package between the cleat planes, thus materially stilening the package in lines at right angles to the end planes not only against thrusts along those lines, but also against tearing' stresses presu, tiiig af. 'rabkiu'g of the package. 'j A f Any suitable form of ends may be used and in the drawings'fI have shown an end consisting of a sheet 20 of the same material as the body members, provided with a pair :of transverse cleats 2l, each having' t'ongl'ies'` 22at their'ends; said tongu'espro'-4 jecting into mortises 23Lformed; in the cleats 13 of the side members, saidmortises being suiiiciently deepened-foixthat urpose.
By making those iiaps v:11. W iich lie With,- in the packa e of suicient length to .be overlaid by the c eats when said cleats are folded into blank-folding position, as indicated at the right ofyFig. 5the cleats serve to hold the ends of said interior fiaps 11 firmly in place and this serves to' assist in the stijiening eiiect ofthese fia-ps upon the box corner.
n the form shown in Fig. 8, -the end {ia-ps 14 areomitted and the cleats 13 are applied directly to the main bod sheet 10. In this form, the side flaps 111W ich are intendedto lie Within the package, must be made short enough-to lie between the cleats when the partsare brought together in box blank arrangement.
The top section will, of course, :have a side iap alongthat edge which forms the free edge Aof the cover.' This final flap, 11 may lie outside of the adjacent side member, as shown in Fig. 1, being attached thereto by any suitable means to hold the box closed, but for somepackages it will be advisable to protectthis flap, 4and for that purposea strip 25 may be applied to the outer faceat the top edge of the front section sov as to form a pocket 26 .for the reception of the flap 11a (Fig. 6), the ila 11 at the top ofthe fronts section exten ing horizontally beneath themain body ofthe top section -when the top is folded into closed position. =Instead of using the strip 25, a pocket for the flap 11L may be formed in the manner shown 1n- Fig. 7, a strip 27 bein applied to the inner face of the sheet 10 o the front member of the box. In .this case, the upper edge of this front member will not be provided With any edge flap,
but, instead, the strip 27 will be of such Width as to extend beyond the edge of said sheet 10, thus forming a iiap 28 whichl will extend beneath the -main body of the top section.
I claim, as my invention r' 1. A foldable box blank comprising a plurality of individual sections, each formed of exible sheet material and transverse cleats, each of said sections having edge flaps overlapping the body sheet of an adjacent section, and one of said overlapping flaps adjacent each fold line being secured to thevoverlapped body.
2. A foldable box blank comprising a plurality of sections, each section comprising a main body sheet, edge flaps overlapping the main body sheet of an adjacent section, oneedge flap at each fold line being attached to the adjacent body sheet, end iaps foldable with relation to the body sheet, and cleats attached to said end flaps and extending transversely with relation to the side flaps.
3. Asan article of manufacture, a box blank section comprising a main bodysheet of. iiexible material having side flaps foldahlewith relation to the body sheet, andA also having end iaps foldable with relation to the body sheet, and cleats attached to said end flaps.
4:. 4A foldable box blank comprising a plurality of sections, each section comprising amain Abody sheet, edge flaps overlapping the main body sheet of an adjacent section, one edge Hap at each fold line being attached to the adjacent body sheet, end flaps foldable with relation to the body sheet, cleats attached tosaid end flaps and extending transversely with relation to the side' iiaps, and a flap-receiving pocket can ried by one of the terminal sections of the blank to receive the side flap of the free edge of the other terminal section.
5, A foldable box blank comprising a plurality of body sections, each section comprising a main portion and edge flaps foldable relative to the main body and an edge Hap at each-fold line overlapping an adjacent body sheet and attached thereto, and cleatsI attached to said body sheets in posi tion to coperate in series when the blank is folded into box form.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this thirteenth day of December, A. I). one thousand nine hundred and fifteen.
