An object of the invention to provide a hand of the above character having an elastic tape disposed in. a fabric pocket with means for SQClllillgtllQ fabric pocket and tacking the tape at certain portions thereof..which tat-king means permits the tape to hc Hat and straight to the end thereof.
,A..fnrtherohject of the invention is to pro-' ride a hand of the above character wherein the fabric pocket is secured to the body portion of the garment by straightaway stitches and thcelastic tape is tackcd at certain portions bv'alternate stitches ina zigza llil c'flf stitches passing through the tape. .il -n the drawingswhich show by way of ilhist't'atioh one ei'nboi'limentof the invention:

Fi 1. I
i ig. 4 is a similar-view on the line b-b In carrying out thcinvention a fabric pocket is formed either from the fabric used in the making of the garment or by a separate section of fabric stitched to the garment. An elastic tape is located within this fabric pocket. The fabric pocket is stitched by a line of stitches which passes along the side of the tape, but does not panes "#9:
trate the tape. During this stitching of the pocket the tape is stretched. Ad acent the ends of the tape or at the points where it is desired to tack the tape to the garment the straightaway line of stitches leads into and forms a part of the zigzag line of stitches Specification of Letters reltent.
Application filed October 12, 1916; Serial No. B5301.
and this Zigzag line of stitches is located so that alternate stitches pass through the tapeand alternate stitches pass through the fabric parts adjacent the edge of the tape. \Vh'on these tacking stitches are placed at-the end of the tape and the tape is released from the tension then the section of the fabric between the tackings will be gathered or failed.
In the drawings I have shown the invention as embodied in a waist-band. The waist isindicated at "W. The lower edge of this band is turned up as at a and this edge isturned inat'w thus forming a hem fold and this hem fold: servesas a pocket indicated at 1 for an elastic tape indicated at 'l" in the drawings. Itwill be. understood that this pocket may be made by using a separate strip, if desired. The elastic tape-extends from end to end of the pocket and its side edges throughout are parallel with the edge of the pocket. The hem fold is stitched a straightaway line of stitches 2 which pass through the folded edge a" of the henrt'old and throngh the body portion of the waist.
This straight-mvay line of stitches extends along the side ofthe elastic ,tape. but does 'will, therefore, be no loose ends of thread between the straight-away line of stitches andthe zigzag line of stitches. It will be noted that alternate stitches in the zigzag line of stitches are in 'line with the straightaway line of stitchesand pass through the a body fabric and hemfold only, while the other alternater'stitches of the zigzag line of stitches are in aline at one Side of the straight-away line of stitches and these alternate stitches ass through the elastic tape, t thus firmly tacl ingthe same. By this arrangement the tape may be tacked without deflecting it in any way fromits normal position, that is, the tape. extends straight to the end' thereof; neither is the line of stitches deflected, but" continues straight to thefend of the waistband, theneedle. moving laterally to en a e the tape at the points where it is tacl ed. This makes a very flat and neat, as well as durable, tacking for the tape. The tape is tacked by a minimum number of needle unctures, that is, the needle punctures in t e tape are disposed the distance of two stitch lengths and this avoids cutting of the tape wh1ch might occur if every stitch in the straight line of stitches passed through the tape. In the forming of the waist-band the needle is set so as to vibrate laterall the zigzag line of stitches is formed and t e end of the tape tacked; after which the operator without stopping the machine causes the needle to cease vibrating laterally stitches will then be formed. The tape is stretched; while the waist-band is being stitched. When the other end of the waistband is reached the operator, without stoppin the stitchin mechanism, causes the nee e to vibrate aterally, thus producing the tacking stitches for the other end of the tape. When the stretched tape is released, as above noted, the fabric between the ends of the tape will be gathered.
' At each end of the band there is a fastening device which consists as shown in the drawings, of a buttonhole indicated at 5 and a button indicated at 6, which is adapted to engage Said buttonhole. In order that the band may be smooth and free from the elastic tape at the point where these fastening devices are attached I cause the needle to vibrate laterally for tackin the tape at a distance back from the end 0? the band and then cause the needle to make straight-away stitches for a short distance at'the end of the band. When the elasti tape is released from tension it will be contracted and this will draw the tape within the pocket back from the end of the band, as clearly shown in the drawings.
While I have shown acombined straightawa line of stitches and zigzag line of stitc es for securing the pocket and tacking the tape it will be understood that these lines of stitches may be modified, the essential featui'e being that the tape shall extend straight to the end of the pocket and the lines of-stitches throughout a greater orr tion of the extent of the band shall lie a on the side of the'tape securing the pocket. and at certain points extend so as to extend to and the straight-away line of" tending across the same,
the ends of the tape one side of this line so as tape.
Havin thus fully'described my invdxition' what I claim as new and desire ti urs by; Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a fabric having a Q pocket extending across the same, a within the pocket extending longitudinafi thereof and acombined straight-away an zigzag line of stitches for secur ng the.pocket;1f-, and tacking the tape at the ends thereofi'the; 0,5 Straight-away line of stitches passin through the fabric adjacent the tapean' alternate stitches in the zigza line of stitches passing through the tape r tacking? the same.
2. The combination of a fabric haviiig a hem fold forming a pocket, an elastic tape extending longitudinally thereof, and a combined straight-away and zigzag line of stitches for securing the pocket and tacking Itthe tape, said straight-away line of stitches passing through the fabric at one side of the tape, alternate stitches in the zigzag line of stitches passing through the fabric in a line at one side of the tape, and alternate stitches in the zigzag line of stitches passing through the fabric and the tape, said tape. being stretched-while the pocket is being stitched.
3. An encircling band including in com- 86 bination a body fabric having a pocket exfastening devices at the ends of the band, an elastic tape within the pocket and having its ends terminating between the fastening devices, said tape 90 having its edges throughout the, entire length thereof parallel with the edge oi the pocket, a continuous line of stitches for securing the ocket and tackin the tape adjacent its en s, said line of stitches ing 96 through the pocket at one side of t e tape from a .point adjacent one end of the tape to a point adjacent the other end thereof, alternate stitches in the continuous line at assing'throu'gh the tape 10.0 for tacking the en s thereof tothe pocket.
