Description
G. M. ZIMMERMAN.
FENCE POST.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-25. I916- Patented Oct. 1, 1918.
INVENTOR zzkwmwwrrzxz ATTORNEY is? a M GEORGE M. lzlllihfilfllilfilidhiii, @l
Application filed September- 525,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. ZIMMER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Sumner, in the county of Guadalupe and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fence Wire connections particularly of the type by which a fence fabric wire or other barrier may be attached to the post, and I especially aim to .provide a construction which will not re quire the use of means additional to the barrier and post to accomplish the fastening function, and to this end to provide a particular form of slot in the post so as to receive and retain the barrier.
The invention aims broadly to provide a round or rounded fence post with a geculiar form of slot, all parts of which are oblique to the length of the post and the extremities of which are far remote as possible from the shank of the slot so that the post will not be unduly weakened.
A further object is to provide the extremities of" the slot with enlargements or eyes so that when the wire reaches these extreinities it is or may be left to an extent, free for longitudinal movement through the post it subsequently necessary.
Additional objects and advantages will appear hereinafter as the description. of the invention progresses in connection With accoinpanying drawings illustrating one preferred cinbodin'ient and wherein z- Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a fence post showing a Wire or barrier fragment attached thereto. and
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, a fence post is shown no at 3. It is to be taken as conventional form oi upright post. entirely cylindrical as seen in Fig. 1 or at least curved on the face pro sentcd to the reader as seen in Fig. 1; and a fragment of the fence Wire shown at 4: is to 30 be attached to this post at right angles thereto. This fragment may also designate a plain WllP. a barbed wire, or any appropriate form of fencing barrier as possibly a piece of Wire fabric, which will herein be referred to by the term wire. It is only necessary to assume that, at the time this Wire is first laid on line of posts, it is to and it is to be ti hten The post is provide a substantially i made up of ar' is diagonal to 1 .n in It. and two to 6 which may be said to cc of the 25, each bei length of the i bat in tion opposite to the inclinati slot or shank 5, "i'i'l'iii acute angle seen. The half the length of the sha' extremities lie in her: opposite the center oi the T slot, and said extremities a i, eyes 7 Whose relative size is she views. Between the left arm. slot is a pendant tang or too tween the main slot and the 1S. upstanding tang or tooth $1., the being left in the curved body when the slot is cut therein. All of a width to admit the ""J'iffi r and the eyes '7 are la the slots. thev also will more less ing to their size. They may be r ably are or such size and dispm when the Wire is drawn taut as it may extend straigh eyes and along a chord made larger the Wire 1' through the two eyes, Wh made small r their corners tionally with the wire and tard its sli 'ipage through them. ditiotri depend upon the size of the size of the Wire. and the nature oi t y which I mean that i'i a round wire and plain wire as iihistra: The disposition of the shank othe 4: oblique in one direction and the tcrniiiirds 1 thereof obliqir. in the opposite direction, leaves 'i'angs 8 and ll of considers ni)l. that the material oi the post is shed; and also it brings the e. around to the sides of the post so i need not necessariiy be so large in i permit the Wire l'o'pass freely thrc In applying the Wire to a post slotted in this manner, he slacis picked up and laid shank 5 as lllCllCfltQCl in dotted lines in a pm 01) [i q 1,14; to said leng'i;
