Description

DANIEL WHITLOCK.
VImprovement in' Journal-Boxes.
No.12802, Patentedlune18,172.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE.
DANIEL WHITLOGK, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN JOURNAL-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.128,002, dated June 18, 1872.
I, DAMEL WnITLooK, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Cast-Iron Boxes for Shafts and Journals, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to the manner of providin g retention-pins or projections cast with the jacket of the box for the purpose of securing the molten Babbitt metal or other lining ixnmovably in the box upon its cooling when poured around shafts or journals in machinery.
In the drawing, Figure l is a view of the core or that part of the sand in which the punetures are made by the rod 0r stick; Z is a pointed rod or stick to make the punctures. Fig. 2 is a box with pins projecting therein. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. 2 on line y y.
In the sand or core B of the chamber in the mold for the interior of the box punctures e e are made by a pointed rod or stick, in such numbers and sizes as are required, into which the molten iron runs when the mold is lled in casting, and by that means the pins or projections a, b, c, and d are formed on the shell or jacket A, which secures the soft metal that forms the lining C to the box, thus"economiz ing much time and labor over the common mode of drilling recesses into the shell of the boxes as in the present mode.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The journal-box, when composed of the shell or jacket A, with the inwardly-projecting pins a, b, c, and d cast therewith, and the lining G of soft metal, when constructed in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. The shell A of a journal-box, having the inwardly-projecting pins a, b, c, and d, in the manner and for the purpose described.
