Description

J. H. LEE.
BROOM.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 6, 191a.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
INVENTOR L/Ofif? #166 WITNESSES ATTORNEY JOHN H. LEE, 0]? SOUTH CLERMONT,
BROOM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Clermont, in the county of Lake and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved broom and the principal object of the invention is to'provide a broom so constructed that straw forming the bristles thereof may be removed and replaced and to further provide an improved broom having straw receiving sockets formed therein and further to provide improved clamping means for engaging the straw.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the straw clamping'means that the two jaws forming the same may be easily released and moved to an inoperative position when removing the straw and after new straw has been put in place, easily returned to an operative position'and securely held in the operative posltlon.
This invention is illustrated panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved broom in side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1; v
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4:"4: of Fig. 1.
This broom is provided with a body portion indicated in general by the numeral 10 and divided into compartments 11 which extend longitudinally or vertically of the body portion and will have their upper ends closed either through the medium of the plugs 12' or by any other suitable closing means. The intermediate or central compartment is extended to provide a. socket for the handle 13 which handle is" held in in the accomplace by the fastener 14. The straw 15' forming the bristles of the broom will be inserted in the sockets or compartments 11 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application filed February 6, 1918. Serial No. 215,687.
' dium of the fasteners 20 thus permitting these clamps to be swung into and out of an operative position. Afterjthe clamps have been swung into an operative position, they will be secured by the fastener screws 21 and the straw will be securely but releasably held in place. When the straw has worn partially away, the clamps may be released and the straw drawn outwardlv so that the straw will extend the proper distance thus greatly lengthening the usefulness of the straw and further permitting the straw to be adjusted to provide a broom head even throughout its width. It will be obvious that the straw may be supplied as a separate article from the holder thus making it only necessary to procure new straw and not an entire broom when the straw in use is entirely worn out.
What is claimed is I A broom comprising a head having a body divided into a plurality of longitudinally extending compartments open at their lower In testimony whereof I aflix my signature I in presence of two witnesses.
