SHEET-DELIVERY MECHANISM FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 24 191. 8;
Application filed December 28, 1914. Serial no'. s79,325.. 1
novel means for delivering whole width or slitted sheets flat either successively or in groups. p
My invention includes means for cutting sheets from a traveling web, a rotary sheet carrier which may be a slitting cylinder, an endless web feeding carrier which engages the web, carries it through the sheet cutting means and transfers the sheets cut therefrom to said rotary sheet carrier; a sheet delivery;
device which may be an endless delivery carrier and'a rotary transfer cylinder arranged to transfer the sheets from the rotary sheet carrier to the endless delivery carrier.
My invention more specifically includes means whereby the cylinder which transfers the sheets from'the rotary sheet carrier to the sheet delivery device may be used either as a means for transferring successive sheets from the rotary sheet carrier to the delivery device or it may be used as a collecting cylinder for collecting thereon successive whole width or slitted sheets as the case may be, and transferring the collected group of sheets to the delivery device, a movable cam being arranged to open the transfer cylinder grippers every second revolution of the transfer cylinder at'the point of transfer to the grippers of'the delivery device, friction pulleys being employed for holding the first whole width or slitted sheets on the transfer cylinder inproperregister while the grippers are open to receive the second whole width or slitted sheets. I V
A practical embodiment of my inventionis represented in the accompanying drawings,
in which Fig. 2 is a detail section taken from front to rear just inside the near side frame,
Fig. 3 is a detail section showing the cams for operating the transfer cylinder grippers, V
' cated withln the path of the endless carrier and Fig.4 is a diagrammatic section taken from front to rear centrally through the delivery mechanism.
The web is fed at a certain speed between the rolll and rollers 2. The means for cutting sheets from the traveling webis shown as apair of rotary cutters 3, 4, mounted on suitable shafts 5, 6, and having one set of coactingblades 7, 8. r
The sheet receivingtable is denoted by 9. A sheet delivery device is arranged to depositthe full width or slitted sheets either, successively or in groups upon the table 9, which delivery device is herein shown as an endless sheet delivery chain carrier 10 having head grippers 11 arranged at intervals along the same.
A rotary sheet carrier, in the present instance a slitting cylinder 12, is mounted upon provided with two sets of grippers 14, 15.
The means for transferring the sheets from the cylinder 12 to the sheet delivery device, is shown as a rotary cylinder 16 mounted on a shaft 17 and having a single set of grippers 18. 'Friction pulleys 19 hearing against the periphery of the transfer cylinderl6 are shown as mounted in yielding arms 20 carried by fixed arms 21 on the cross shaft 22.
A'curved sheet guide 23 is also provided partway around the periphery of the transfer cylinder 16. I
An endless web feeding carrier, which is shown herein as an. endless chain carrier 23, has, at intervals thereon, side grippers 24 carried to grasp the side edges of the web before the web reaches the rotary cutters 3, 4, carry the web through said rotary cutters and finally transfer the heads of the sheets cut from the web to the grippers 14 or 15 of the cylinder 12. Guides 25, 26, serve to guide the web from the feed roll to the rotary cutters and a guide 27 serves to support the sheets from the rotary cutters to the cylinder 12. Y I
"A rotary sheet tucker 28 is mounted on a shaft 29 within the path of the endless car- 23 and. the carrier is herein shown as down- Wardly inclined from the web roll 1 to a point beyondthe cylinder 12.
The side grippers 24 are operated by fixed cams 30 at the proper point to grasp the side edges of the web near thebeginning of the rectilinear portion of their travel away from the receiving end: of the endless carrier.
Fixed cams 31 are arranged in position to open the side grippers 24 near the end of the rectilinear portion of their travel toward the delivery end of the carrier at the proper time to transfer the sheets cut from the web to the grippers on the cylinder 12.
' A fixed cam 32 is arranged in position to successively operate the grippers 14, 15, of the cylinder 12 to cause them to close upon the heads of successive sheets as they are fed from the endless carrier 23 and a fixedcam 33 is arranged in position to open the grippers'to transfer the heads of the sheets to the grippers 18 of the transfer cylinder 16.
A fixed cam 34 is arranged in position to operate the grippers 18 of the transfer cylinder to cause them to receive successive sheets from the grippers 14, 15, ofthe cylinder 12.
A cam 35 is carried by one arm of a rock lever 36 pivoted at 37, the other arm of which lever is provided with a stud or roller 38 traveling in the groove 39 of a rotary box cam 40 mounted on a shaft 41.
A gear 42 is carried by the box cam 40 and a gear 43 is mounted on the shaft 17 of the transfer cylinder. When the transfer cylinder is utilized fortransferringsuccessive sheets from the cylinder-12 to the .endless delivery carrier 10, the gears 42 and 43 are placed out of mesh, thus holding the cam 35 stationary. Whenthe transfer cylinder is usedfor collecting successive. sheets, in the present instance two, from the cylinder 12 and transferring the group of sheets to the grippers 11 of the endless delivery carrier, the gearsv 42 and 43v are brought into mesh so that the cam 35 is moved into position to open the transfer cylinder grippers 18 every second revolution thereof, at their point of transfer to, the endless delivery carrier.
A fixed cam 44 is arranged in position to operate the successive head grippers 11 of the endless delivery carrier to cause themv to receive the heads vof the, sheets from the transfer cylinder grippers 18.
A fixed cam 45 is arranged in position to operate the head grippers .11 to cause them to release the heads of the sheets-at the proper time for delivery onto the sheet receiving table 9. h
It is to be understood that where two sheets are collected on the transfer cylinder alternatehead grippers :on the .endlessdelivery carrier may-be removed.
, Where the sheets are to beslit longitudinally of their travel into a plurality of sheets, one or more slitting disks 46 may be provided in position to slit the sheets onthe cylinder 12.
The geared connection between the several parts is as follows: Theshaft 13 of the cylinder 12 is driven through the train of gears 47, 48, 49, 50. The rotary cutters are driven from the gear 48 through the gear 51 and the endless web feeding carrier 23 has its side chains exteriorly toothed and driven by gears 52 on the shaft 5 of the rotary cutter 3 at the speed of the traveling web. The transfer cylinder shaft 17 is driven from the cylinder shaft 13 through the gears 53, 54. The endless delivery carrier 10 is driven from the gear 54 through the gears 55, 5'6, 57. The shaft 58 of the slitter 46 is driven from the shaft 13 through thegears 53,59. The shaft 29 of'the rotary tucker is driven from the shaft 13 through the gears '53, 610.
The geared connection between'the several parts is such that the cylinder 12 has a surface speed slightly higher than the speed of the traveling web and of the surface speed of' the web feeding endless carrier. The transfer cylinder and the endless delivery carrier have the same surface speedas the cylinder 12. This cylinder 12 has each of its sheet carrying surfaces at little longer than the sheet thereby leaving an open space between the sheets sufficient to permit the coaction of the transfer cylinder grippers with the grippers on the cylinder 12 when takingthe sheets from said cylinder.
In operation: The side grippers of the endless web feed engage the side edges of the traveling'web at the speed thereof and carry the web through the rotary cutters where the sheet is cut from the web. These side grippers feed the head .of the sheet to the grippers on the cylinder 12, the rotary tucker 28 insuring the accurate grasping of the head "of'the sheet by saidgrippers on the cylinder 12 absolutely squarewith the side.
edges of the sheet; If desired, the sheetlis slit longitudinally ,of its travel on the cylinder 12 and the slit sectionsare then trans ferred to the transfer cylinder grippers 18. If the sheet is not to be slit, the whole width sheet is transferred to the said grippers 18. The whole width or slitted, sheets are transferred successively to the head grippers 11 of theendlessdelivery carrier 10 or, if so desired,'the whole Width or slitted sheets may be collected by the grippers 18 into groups and the groups transferred to the head grippers 11 In the former; instance, the cam 35 is held stationary byputting the gears 42, 43, out of mesh and'in the latter instance this cam is rendered movable by putting the said gears into mesh.
Thehead grippers, 11 deliver the whole width or slitted sheets onto the sheet receivingtable 9. V r
WVhile'I have shown the sheets as slit'into pairs, it is obvious that the sheets maybe dinally into any number ofsmaller sheets,
asdesired.
It is also to be seen that'the sheets either whole width or slitted, may be delivered successively or in groups, as desired;
' By the term cylinders wherever used, I wish to include any means suitable for carrying the sheets through the prescribed paths and by the term grippers I wish to include any means suitable for engaging the sheets to lead them through their path of travel.
By maintaining control of the sheet after it is cut from the web until it is positively engaged by the grippers on the cylinder 12, I am enabled to feed the sheet with its head absolutely square with respect to its side edges so as to insure the accurate slitting of the sheet parallel with said side edges when it is desired to slit the sheets.
Furthermore, by the use of the endless web feeding carrier, for feeding the web through the cutters and then transferring the sheet cut therefrom to the slitting cylinder, the mechanism for handling the web and sheets is materially simplified.
It is evident that changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but
