WIT/V5885 "1 thereofis to provide eflicient and practical fmeans for mounting and driving an electric n STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BI-TUR, or 'imw ironic, N. Y., Assiouon, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0 BIJUIL MOTOR APPL ANcE COMPANY, A oonroRA'rIoN or DELAWARE.
To all ivhom it may cohcem: jB
zen of the United States, residing at New GEARING.
. Application iiie i'a ri v, 1911. Serial no. 619,439,
"own that I, JOSEPH B'IJrm, a citi- York, in the county of New York and State of New York, .have invented, certain new and useful- Improvements in Gearing, of
I I which the following is alfull, clear, and exact description, suchas will enableothers skilled in the art to which it 'apperta'ins to make and use'the same.
This invention relates to electrical ener- ,ating apparatus for 3 automobiles-an regard tothemore s cific features-thereof, to the driving mec anisin and associated parts of such apparatus. One of the objects generator for automobiles ;-and the like which shall h'e'e conomic'al in consumption of space and readily .adaptable to' meet various conditions. Anotherobject is toprovide I apparatus of the above nature 0t simple and chea -construction-and which is. notsus- [-cepti le to 'dirt or duster liable'to in ury. .5.
[part-pointed out hereinafter. I,
":The' invention accordingly COIlSlStS in .'the
Qtherobjectswill bein part obviousv and in i I featuresofg'construction, combinations of'ele* "of which will be indicated in the following.
. {J'lntheiaccompanying drawings, W heI'eHL ments and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth,-and thescope of the application claims. I
are shown one or more various possible em-.
. b'odiments of the-several features of this in-- vention,
Figure '1 is a diagrammatic elevation showing the same mounted-in position;
stantially througli'the center' of-the same;v
Fig. 3-is an end view of the part shown -Qr Figjiis a detail elevation'of a swing-. ing casing member or support; I Fig. =5'is a similar view of a ca'i'Sing-taken from thef opposite side-3- I Fig. e s an end 1 indic ti g-assess v 0f assembling the parts;
I Fig. f7 1 is a sectional; levatioriof the en-"- tire embddiment offcertain features of the inventi n and" i Fi .8; is an end View thereof. Similar reference characters refer to. 11111- Fig. 2 is a Sectional elevation taken sub lar parts throughout the severalviews of the .drawings. i
Referring nowjtoFig; l the drawings in detail, there is shown-atl an internal combus'tioncngine of'fthe' automobile type provided with a crank shaft 2, from which is driven, by the gears 3, a shaft 4 having thereon the pump 5 and magneto 6, respectively communicatingw'ith the "jacket water Patented Sept. 24-, 1918.
paratus, as the storing post diagrammatically indicated at 9, there remains adjacent shaft 4 acramped space only, in which is positionedan electrical generating device 10. As best shown in Fig. 2, the generator 10 ing bearings 12 and 13 and having fixed 'thereon a pinion l4. Bearing 13 is incased within an annular shoulder 15 and 'journaled upon the outer side of this shoulder is a-swinging support or casing memberlfi. This'member, the shape of which is best indicated in Fig, '4: of the drawings, has mounted therein a pin 17 upon which is loosely journaled a power-transmitting gear i provided with an armatureshaft 11 have 18 of greater diameter than the pinion 14 I and formed constantly to mesh therewith as the member 16 is swung about the collar '15.
. Mounted upon shaft 4 is a driving gear 19 adapted toiinesh with the gear-'18, and
by reason of the multiplication of speed .from the latter to the PlIIlOII llz, tliisgear need not be of large diameter. Moreover, as e I gear 18 is constantly in proper relation to the pinion, it .is necessary merely that it be swung into mesh with the gear 19 in order ,tocomplete'an efiicient drive, and, hence, the armature shaft need not be positioned at an predetermined distance from shaft 4.
Thus, by my. invention, I avoid the practice of designing'a special dynamo drive for every design of engine, having, due regard in every case forthe choice of a convenient location for the dynamo not already occupied by, another accessory or accessories] of the engine. I achieve this result byfproviding a drive which maybe standard for any power reduction .and which is inherently adapted to make a power connection with the dynamo regardless where,-.within limits, the, assembler may be compelledto locate said dynamo With respect to H1661]- gine. By reason of this feature a large de-' 60 slightly difi'erentfrom" casing 23 to accomthe drive would be complete and efiicient even though the gear 18 is not disposed directly between gear 19 and pinion 14. There are provided in the member 16 set-screws 20 whereby the parts may be locked in proper position and this part has formed therein screw-holes 21 in the flange 22, by which it supports a casing 23, bestshown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Casing 23 is longitudinally split, as at 24, and isprovided with coacting pair of ears 25 to secure its halves in assembled position. It is supported upon the casing member 16 not only by the screws in the holes 21 but by screws 26 as shown in Fig. 3.
In the use of the above described embodiment, the generatoris mounted in any convenient position, which may be ofiset from the shaft 4 either vertically or horizontally, or both; The gear 18 'is then swung into proper mesh with gear 19 and locked in position by the set-screw 20. The casing 23, the partsof which are. separated, is then fitted about, the shaft 4 and .assembled by means ofthe ears' 25 and secured in position upon the swinging casing member 16. The drive is then-complete from shaft 4 to the armature with the desired. multiplication of speed and without the necessity for using large gears.or .ca-refully mounting the generator in a predetermined position. -It is to be understood thatif it is desired. to
, "mount the generator with the gear 18 offset from the plane of shafts 11 and 4, there will be used a casing 23 of such form as to permit this arrangement of the parts. This casing not only protects all the gearing from the effect of dirt and dust, but guards the teeth of the vulnerable portions from its accessories.
In Figs; 7 and 8, there is shown a slightly wrenches or other tools upon the. engine or diiferent embodiment of this invention, in which the pin. 27 is somewhat longer than the corresponding pin 17 of the first de scribed construction and has mounted there- ,on a pinion 28 fixed to the gear 18 of a materially smaller size. Pinion 28 meshes "with the gear 19 and permits a further mul- 28 may be ofproper pitch for gear 19- and the gear 18 of a pitch equal to that of the pinion 14, The casing 29 is of a form modate and protect the change in form of drive, but itis assembled and held in sub stantially thev same manner.
It will thus be seen that there is provided apparatus in which the aims of this invention are achieved, and whlch, wh le permltting any desired multiplication of speed and full protection of the vulnerable parts, nevertheless imposes no strict limitations as to the position of the generator and is adapted for use in the most crowded relations. The parts, moreover, are of the simplest and most durable construction and are of thoroughlywreliable and quiet action.
As many changes could be made in theabove construction and many apparently widely different embodiment of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all ten ed to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of- I the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1.
