PEN on rENoILoLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented s ept. 157, 1918 Application filed November 8, 1917. Serial at. 200,947.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SAsoH, a citizen of the Kingdom of Roumania, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen or Pencil Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders or clips for pens, pencils or the like, being adapted particularly for use in holding the article in proper upright position in the pocket.
The primary ob ect of the invention is to provide a clip for this purpose which is capable of being easily applied to or removed from the pencil or pen, and which has double clamping means for holding the article properly positioned in the pocket.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clip which may be used in such manner as to properly hold the article within the pocket and without protruding beyond the open end of the pocket, whereby the pencil or pen will be held securely in pockets having closure flaps, without holding the flap open and without causing a bulge in the flap above the pocket end.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a clip of the character mentioned.
which may be formed of a single piece of metal which is simple in construction, which may be manufactured at exceedingly low cost, and which will prove thoroughly practical and efficient in use.
With these objects in view together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the top portion of a conventional form of fountain pen, and illustrating the application of a clip con structed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the pen and showing the improved clip in section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 4 indicates a strip or shank formed preferably of thin, narrow, flat metal, and may be substantially straight throughout the major portion of its length. This strip has a hook portion at one end adapted to engage with the edge of the pocket to hold the im proved clip firmly in place,-and this hook is formed by bending the shank near one end as at 5, providing a spring hook or clamp portion 6. The extremity of this hook may be bent outwardly as at 7 to facilitate the easy application of the hook over the edge of the clothing defining the pocket.
To firmly hold the pen or pencil to the clip, spring arms 8 are provided, the said spring arms extending from the forward face of the strip at right angles thereto. These arms project from the opposite edges of the strip, substantially intermediate the ends of the latter, and are adapted to confine betweenthem and to firmly grip the upper end of the pen or pencil indicated at 9.
The lower end of the strip 4: may be rolled or provided with a ball 10, so as to enable the same to be engaged over the edge of the pocket when it is desired to use this portion of the strip as a retaining means for the clip.
When it is desired to confine the pen or pencil in a pocket having a flap to close the open end thereof, the clip is applied to the upper end of the article with its spring arms 8 tightly engaging the same. The upper or a bent end of the strip 4 will be approximately even with the upper end of the pen or pencil 9. The article 9 is then inserted in the pocket, and the spring hook 6 is engaged over the upper ed e of the pocket. This'hook lower portion of the strip 4 may be used as aclamping means for the clip and article.
In order that the lower portion of the strip 4 may be held in spaced parallel relation to the pencil or pen, the said strip may be bent outwardly as at 11, a distance substantially equal to one half the diameter or thickness of the ball or rolled portion 10. While the present is a disclosure of what is believed to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, as various changes in the minor details of construction, proportion, and arrangement of i of the article protrude from the pocket, the
parts may be resorted to if desired Without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim..
I claim As an article of manufacture, a holder comprising a strip of thin, fiat spring metal, a pair of clamp arms formed integral with the said strip, intermediate the ends thereof andprojecting at substantially right angles from the edges of the strip, one end of said strip being bent over to provide a spring hook, the said strip being bent outwardly adjacent the said arms to provide a shoi'ilder, against which the free end of the said spring hook normally engages, and the 15 portion of the said strip below said shoulder being in spaced parallel relation to the remainder of the straight portion ofthe strip. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
