STANLEY WERBITSKI, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CIGARETTE AND MATCH BOX.
Application filed. May 3, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY lVERBiTSKI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, having declared my intentions to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and .State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette and Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a box adapted for holding both cigarettes and matches so that a person purchasing a box of cigarettes will also have a supply of matches directly at hand for use in lighting and smoking the cigarettes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for supplying matches ready for use with cigarettes contained in the box, the matches being so positioned as to take up but little room in the box and being suitably covered whether the cigarette box is open or closed.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a ready means for carrying matches within a cigarette box, the matches being covered when the box is closed, the opening of the box uncovering the matches,
while retaining means for the matches is adapted to assist in retaining the cover closed uponthe box.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in its open position;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device when closed taken upon a plane parallel with the bottom of the box;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of a portion of the device in its closed arrangement; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the box and match holder open.
My invention relates to containers serviceable for holding either cigarettes or cigars and is herein illustrated in the form of a cigarette box 10 having a hinged top or cover 11, the cigarettes such as 12 being arranged within the box in substantially the usual manner.
A partition or wall 13 is longitudinally positioned within the box 10 forming a compartment 14 adjacent the front wall 15 of the box adapted for holding a suitable Specification of Letters Patent. P t t t, 17, 191
Serial No. 232,230.
supply of matches for service in lighting 7 the cigarettes 12.
A lid 16 is provided for the compartment 14 hingedly connected to the partition 13 by means of straps 17 preferably formed of resilient material such as rubber. These straps 17, when slightly stretched, are secured to the lid and partition so as to normally hold the lid 16 partly open and tilted as indicated in Figs. 1 and4 of the draw ing. A cutaway portion 18 may be pro vided in the front wall 15 of the box 10 rendering the matches within the compartment 14 more easily accessible.
The free end portions 19 of the straps 17 are adapted to overlie the adjacent portions 20 of the box wall 15 when the cover 11 is closed thereover whereby the end portions 19 will be lightly compressed between said cover and wall portions 20 as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This compressing of the end portions 19 causes them to function as resilient retainers for the cover 11 assisting to maintain the cover in its closed position although readily opened when desired by the owner. A match-striking surface 21 is provided at any suitable point upon the box 10 such as the end thereof as herein illustrated in Fig. 1.
The complete operation of the device will be at once apparent, the lid 16 being normally maintained open when the cover 11 is open so that the hand may be inserted through the cutaway portion 18 and beneath the lid 16 into the compartment 14 for picking out matches while the cigarettes 12 may be readily removed from the box 10. Upon closing the cover 11 upon the box, the lid 16 will be closed over the compartment 14 and the ends 19 of the straps engaged between the cover and front wall of the box for retaining the box and compartment closed until again desired for use. A serviceable article is provided for conveniently positioning the matches ready for use accompanying the cigarettes when purchased, while this addition to an ordinary box adds only slight expense to the same.
What I claim as new is 1. In combination with a box having a hinged cover, a partition within the box forming a compartment adjacent one side of the box, a lid for said compartment resting upon the partition, resilient hinge connections between the lid and partition whereby the lid is normally maintained in an inclined open position when the cover is open, the side of the box adjacent said compart ment being cut away forming an entrance opening for the compartment, and project ing end portions upon said hinge connections adapted for resilient positioning between the cover and the adjacent portion of the box when the cover is closed with the lid closed upon the compartment within the cover.
2. In combination with a box having a hinged cover and with the forward wall of the box cut away forming an entrance opening, a partition within the box forming a compartment between said partltion and wall, a normally open lid for the compart- 1 the box and the cover for retaining the cover and lid in their closed positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
STANLEY WERBITSKI.
