' ELEcTHoTHERMAL ROBE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN23|191B./

Toall, whom #may concerne:
Beit known-'that I,;HQWARD:H. WALLACE, a citizenf'of theUnitedSta'tes, residing at Salt Lake v(lith-.inthe- .countyy of Salt Lake andv State of .Utah, lhavefinvented certain nevir anduseful Improvements in Electro-*- thermal Robes, of which.` thefollowing is p a, specification. Y n
My invention relates. toielectro-thermal y lozgarments, and has'lfor its object to provide a blanket robe which'maylv be wrapped and fastened about a person to treat such person medically `with electricallygenerated heat and cons'istszof an outer vslip or covering vwithin 'which is carried an inner part or portionjwhichfhas resistance wires sewed thereon.J .with the `terminals yso positioned thatywhen thecornpletedprobe is folded.
aboutthe person 'andfsecuredthat' the fastening fmeans will formeicient lelectric condiiferentparts'ofthebody may be given electro,-thermall treatment; l f a Thesev objects I accomplish ywith the apparatus, i illustrated in thei accompanying drawings in which similarletters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed." out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which I have shown a l substantial embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a plan. View -of the wire carrying portion. Fig. 2 is a. plan view of the outer slip or covering, parts cut away. Fig. 3 is a view of the apparatus when folded and fastened on the legsl of a figure shown there lin and before the sides are foldedninto treatment position. Fig. k4: is a plan ofone of the insulating members before it is sewed on the wire carrying portion and over the contacts. Fig. 5` shows plan and section views of the contact members.
f In giving electrothermal treatments the heat causes the patient' to perspire freely .and the portion of ,thev robe incontact with the bodyV is dampened and often filled perspiration thrown off by the body, so that it is' highly desirable yto change the slip or 'outer covering of the robe for each treatment. yIn order that the heat may be ap- 4plied tothe particular parts of the body l requiring treatment the robe must be lso constructed that electric circuits .may lbe made easily and quickly and carry out Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Sept..10, 1918.
" i Application filed January 23, 1918. Serial No. 213,425.
theabove the present invention consists of a sllp or outer covering Ainade of material that may be laundried andl conforming to the general form of the robe.l For conven- 1en-ce in removing the heat element or wire carrying portion snap fastenings '1, similar to those used at the ywrists of gloves, areprovided in the adjacent edges of said slip A, by means of `which saidslip vmay be closed or opened as desired. A heat element B is. provided for use within saidslip A, and is to be inserted atthe end of said slip and fastened thereinlby means ofsaid clasps l. The said heat element Lconsists of a `piece of cloth or other ieXible fiber 2 made to conform to the shape of the said slip A, and on which is sewed resistance wires a, b, and ,0. cloth 2 by overcast stitching 3 crossing in zigzag courses over saidg wire, which wire is laid in parallel courses, and commencing at the upper left hand corner it is stitched parallel with the edge of said cloth 2 to the lower left hand corner, then -turned and led up and down oversaid cloth 2 and attached to one member 4 of the clasp at a point marked 6 in the drawings. one end electrically attached to the other member 5 of the clasp which is secured at the lower left hand corner ofthe leg covery said portion 2 at a place marked 9 in the drawing, where it is electrically attached to another member 5 of afsimilarclasp to that previously described. A resistance wire similar to said wires a and b is likewise attached tothe member 4f of the clasp which is fastened in the said -cloth-2 at practically the center of the right half portion of said cloth, shown a t^7,1andl stitched to said cloth.
by ,overcast stitching over said wire in par- A wire b hasy The said wire a is fastened to said allel leads up and down over said main por- 1 tion 2 of said cloth to the upper right'hand corner, and then across the upper end of said cloth 2 to the upper left hand corner. The wires a and c' are connected with a source of electric energy, not shown. Each of the members t and 5 of claspsare covered byy a piece of asbestos flexible iber vcloth 16 as shown in Fig. 4 and said' piece stitched securely on said cloths 2 and 2 Where the clasps are required thus providing an insulating heat resisting covering for said clasps to prevent burning of the robe by the electricity used to charge the Wires a, Z) and c. A row of said clasp members 4 and 5 is provided on a longitudinal middle line of said slip A but without electrical connections. lVith the robe assembled by placing the Wire carrying member B Within the slip A,the robe may be fastened on the lpatient or person to be treated by folding the portion 2 of the heat element and its covering of the part of the slip over the legs of the person and pressing the members 4 and 5 of the clasps into engagement at points 6 and 7 and folding the side portions of the main part 2 of the heat element B and the similar portions of the said slip A, over the breast of the person being treated. The engaging of the clasp members4 and 5 at the respective points 6 and 8, and 7 and 9 closes an electric circuit and electricity passing over the resistance Wires a, b and c will generateheat around the legs of the person which Will be retained around the body by the folds of the robe. Induced electric currents will be developed around the said wires a, and c which With the heat so generated as above will be applied to the. person being treated. The essential features of my invention are the covering of the heat element by the detachable slip, the form of the robe and the'contact members 4 and 5 of the clasps.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. An electro-thermal robe consisting of a detachable slip, having a central portion extended at one end as a leg covering; a Wire carrying flexible robe conforming in general shape to said slip and t0 be used within said slip; resistance wires stitched in parallel leads on said last described robe terminating at one corner thereof and connected into a circuit by folding and fastening said robe in place; and clasp members to which the terminals of said Wires are attached which close an electric circuit when engaged one with the other.
2. An electro-thermal robe consisting of a detachable slip a Wire carrying flexible robe conforming to the shape of said slip and used therein; resistance wires stitched in parallel rows on one face of said last described robe with the ends so terminating that they may be brought into electric circuit When the robe is folded and fastened in place; and snap members attached to the ends of said Wires which when pressed into engagement one with the other will firm one electric circuit.
3. An electro-thermal robe consisting of a detachable slip; a Wire carrying -flexible robe conforming to the shape of said slip and used therein; resistance wires stitched in parallel rows on one face of said last described robe with the ends so terminating that they `may be brought into an electric circuit when the robe is folded and fastened in place; snap members attached to the ends of said Wires which when pressed into engagement one With the other Will form onescontinuous circuit; and a piece of asbestos fiber insulation stitched on opposite faces of said snap members and to said robe.
Intestimony whereof I have affixed my signa-ture.
