ATENT Fro EDMOND CHMIELEWSKI, OF NEW IBEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CAVALRY-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed June 11, 1918. Serial No. 239,435.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND CHMIELEW- SKI, a citizen of Russia, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cavalry-Machines, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a motor driven machine in the nature of a tank employed for war purposes and more especially for annihilating cavalry, the device possessing great strength for cutting its way through a wide area of horses, men or troops.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bullet proof motor car adapted for traveling through the enemys ranks enabling the soldiers within the device to fire upon the enemy as well as to regulate motor driven cutting means carried through the enemys ranks for mowing down the enemy.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the same; 4
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device with parts broken away;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same with parts broken away and removed; and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a portion thereof.
My invention provides a motor car having a chassis frame 10 supporting a platform 11 carrying an inverted bowl shaped roof or canopy 12 formed of bullet proof metal having slots 13 adjacent the top 14 thereof for affording ready ventilation to the interior of the car. The car is operated in the usual manner having forward steering wheels 15 and rear driving wheels 16, the latter being connected to the motor 17 in the usual manner.
Guns 18 are mounted upon the platform 11 for firing through ports or openings 19 at each end of the canopy 12. Each end of the canopy 12 is pointed as at 20 and it will be understood that the car may be driven in either direction by means of the motor 17 and steered for traveling from place to place as found desirable.
A gear 21 is carried by the driving shaft 22 of the motor 17 meshing with a pinion 23 having connection with a sprocket wheel 24L controlled by means of a suitable clutch 25. A driven shaft 26 is transversely journaled substantially centrally through the canopy 12 having a sprocket wheel 27 operatively connected by means of a chain 28 with the aforementioned sprocket wheel 2d.
Rods 29 are connected to the opposite ends of the driven shaft 26 exteriorly of'the canopy 12 by means of universal joints 30, while brackets 31 upon the outer ends of said rods are provided with wheels 32 for riding upon the ground, such as 33 during the operation of the device. A sliding sleeve 34: is pro vided for each of the universal joints 30 adapted for covering the said joints when the rods 29 are operatively revolved by the driven shaft 26, the said sleeves being adapt-- ed for maintaining the rods 29 in axial alinement with the shaft 26.
A post- 35 carried by each of the brackets 31 is provided with two cables attached to the top of the post and diverging toward the canopy 12, passes over rollers 36 and through perforations 37 in the sides of the canopy 12 with the inner ends of the cables wrapped around and secured to a roller 28 journa'led within the canopy. An operating crank 39 is provided for each roller 38 as well as a pawl and ratchet retaining means 40. The car is preferably provided with one or more doors, such as 452.
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from this detail description thereof, it being seen that during the travel of the car 17 that the outstretched rods 29 may be rapidly revolved when desired upon closing the clutch 25, and whereby the knives 41 of the said rods will cut through entanglements, barriers, or even troops of cavalry or infantry. A wide swath or path may be cut in this manner by my machine during the forward travel thereof through the enemys lines with the rods 29 in operation. When it is desired to move the car without operating the knives 41, the clutch 25 is released interrupting the operative connection between the driving shaft 22' and the driven shaft 26 so that the rods 29 will be idle and upon turning the rollers 39 in the required direction, the brackets 31 and rods 29 will be elevated upon the universal joints 30. The pawl and ratchet means 40 retains the rods in their inoperative positions with the wheels 32 elevated above the ground 33, it being understood that the sleeves 34 of the joints 30 must be slipped outwardly ofi' of the joints for permitting the relative swinging movement of the rods 29 upon the shaft 26 at said joints 30. The device may be driven by means of the motor 17 to the enemys lines with the rods 29 elevated, and when desired for operation the pawl members 40 may be released permitting the rods to lower to horizontal positions with the wheels 32 upon the ground 33 and upon adjusting the sleeves 34 over the joints 80, the device may continue its travel through the ranks of the enemy. The position of the cables 32 assist the bracket 31 in supporting the rods 29 which are also maintained outstretched by means of the sleeves 3- covering the universal joints. An efiicient tank for cavalry attacks is provided in which the motor driven knife 41 as well as the guns 18 are employed against the enemy.
What I claim as new is:
1. A machine comprising a motor driven platform, an inverted bowl shaped canopy secured surrounding said platform having ports'adjacent its opposite ends, and ventilating slots adjacent the top thereof, guns mounted upon said platform projecting through said ports, motor driven knives adjustably carried at opposite sides of the canopy, a controlled motor driven transverse shaft extending through the canopy, a rod adjustably connected to each opposite end of said shaft, a plurality of knives upon said rods, and supporting means for the outer ends of said rods. v,
2. A' machine comprising a motor driven platform, an inverted bowl shaped canopy secured surrounding said platform having ports adjacent its opposite ends and ventilating slots adjacent the top thereof, guns mounted upon said platform projecting through said ports, motor driven knives adjustably carried at opposite sides .of the canopy, a controlled motor driven transverse shaft extending through the canopy, a rod adjustably connected to each opposite end of said shaft, a plurality of knives upon said rods, supporting means for the outer ends of said rods, adjustable sleeves upon said 'universal joints adapted for rendering said joints inoperative with the rods and shaft in axial alinement, a journaled bracket at the outer end of each rod, a ground engaging wheel in each bracket, a post mounted upon each bracket, cables attached to the top of each post divergently extending through the adjacent side of the canopy, and pulling means for said cables arranged within the latter.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDMOND OHMIELEWSKI.
