TABLE-CLOTH SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3 1918 Application filed November 28, 1917. Serial No. 204,390.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURLAN S. B ARBER, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at v Minonk, in the county of Woodford, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Table-Cloth Support; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved table cloth support, and one of the objects of the invention is the provision of an improved support of this kind, which may be manufactured fora small cost and sold at a reasonable profit. I
On large farms or ranches, the food in dishes is placed on the table, and heretofore a table cloth or the like is thrown thereover, and when the hands working on the farm or ranch come in at meal timethe cloth is removed, allowing access to the food on the table. In this way the cloth very often contacts with the food itself.
Therefore, another object of the invention is the provision of an improved, simple, and eflicient support, preferably one at each end of the table, or as many as may be desired, consisting of a single length of yieldable wire bent to form an arch and provided with spring coils,
and having-means at its ends to clamp in engagement with the opposite longitudinal portion of the marginal edge of the table top, to support the table cloth in a raised or arched position over the food.
In practical fields the detail of construe:
tion may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a table top disclosing the improved support applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the table top showing the support in elevation.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view in perspective of one end of one of the supports.
Referrin more especially, to the drawings, 1 des1gnates the support as a whole be supported in an arch which consists of a single length of yieldable or spring wire, which may be bent in any suitable shape, preferably arched as illustrated. The single length ofwire is provided with one or more spring coils or twists 2 in order to insure additional resiliency or yieldability. Each end of the wire is bent at 3, 4 and 5, thereby forming an arm 6 consisting of double thicknesses of wire, to engage the upper face of the table top. The wire beyond the bend 5 is again bent as at 7, and beyond this bend the wire is turned in the form of a circular clamping portion or arm 8. In this manner, viewing the support in side elevation, a U-shaped end is formed, to straddlethe edge portion of a table top. In other words the circular arm or portion 8 engages the under face of the table top, whereas the arm 6 engages the upper face of the table top, thereby holding the support 1 rigidly 111 position, there being a support at each end of the table, whereby the table cover may position over the food. If desired one table cloth may engage the table top proper with the food thereon, while another cloth may be thrown over the supports. .In this way the clamping members at the ends of the support may hold the cloth that contacts with the table top as well as supporting the second cloth over the food. The opposing and abutting parts of each looped arm 6 may be separated or sprung apart to receive and clamp a portion of the table spread therebetween, thereby preventing accidental displacement of the spread. a
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
A' table spread support comprising a frame constructed from a single length of spring wire material and being arched and resilient and to extend from one side of the table top to the other, said frame have spring coils, one near each end, each end of the frame beyond the coil being bent upon itself to form a loop arm overhanging the upper surface of the table top, the opposite adjacent sides of each looped arm adapted to be separated to receive and clamp therebetween said table spread,-said end portion beyond the loop arm being bent U-sha ed to d e t e g P rt n 9f the rate t p,
the lower arm of said U-shaped portion terminatingrin an enlarged circular spring ring having an unattached extremity and adapted to yielda'bly engage under the table top, whereby the arched frame may be supported in an upright position should one end of the frame be detached.
