GATE-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 2'7, 1 918.
Application filed March 29,1918. Serial No. 225,532.
vidual while seated in a vehicle passing through the gateway.
A further object is to provide in connection with a gate including one vertical side member mounted to rotate with reference to a stationary base and provided with an offset arm, a lever pivotally mounted on a suitable supporting device carried by one of the gate posts, said lever having connection by means of a link with the oifset arm specified.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con: struction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
, In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Fig. 2 is a detail View in elevation.
A portion of the fence, Within which the gateway is provided, is designated 10, and the adjacent fence or gate post is shown at 12, the oppositely located gate post] being designated 13. A stationary member 14 will 1 be located at ,or near the surface, of the ground adjacent to gate post 12 andis pro vided with an aperture in the upper surface thereof for receiving the lower end of the vertical member 15 comprising an element of the gate. The remaining portion of the structure of the gate includes rails or bars 16 and an upright 17, together with a diagonally extending brace 18 connected with one lower corner 19 of the gate and with the upper portion of post 15, at the point 20.
The gate post 12 is provided with a bracket 22 extending in the direction shown and serving to mount the lever 23 by means of a pivot 24.
The upright 15 of the gate is provided With an arm 30 extending laterally therefrom and having pivotal connection at 31 with a short bar or link 32, this link being pivoted to the lever 23 at the point 34.
'By means of the construction shown the gate may be operated from either side of the gateway andby means of either lever 28 What is claimed is v p In a device of the class described, aplurality of gate posts, a gate including a plurality of vertically mounted members and horizontal cross bars,, means for rotatably mounting one of said vertical members with reference to one of the gate posts, a bracket carried by the gate post last named, an arm carried by said rotatable member and extending toward the opposite end of the gate, a lever pivotally mounted on the bracket, a link connecting the lever with the arm and adapted to rotate the latter and the rotatable member of the gate, a plurality of operating levers, and means connecting each of said levers with the lever first named, said link and that portion of the lever between the fulcrum and its point ofconnection with the link, constituting a toggle joint, the elements of which are in alinement when the gate is closed.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
