lP'atented Sept. 3., 19213...
Application filed December 21, 1917. Serial No. 208,283.
To all 'wwm it may concem:
Be it known that I, FELIKs BoRUcz, a citizen of Russia, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvaniaj have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ship-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvenients in ship protectors.
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of a protector for ships adjustably arranged upon the hull thereof for'positioning at the proper height to correspond with the draft of the ship.
A further object of the invention is to provide amissile shield for ships adapted :for arrangement in the water surrounding the ship and readily adjustable to any height from points within the hull so as to arr'ange the shield at all times adjacent the water' level under varyingl load conditions of the ranged for the device.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a protector for a ship arranged for Vertical adjustment upon the hull thereof surrounding the latter and substantially vertically positioned, the device being light in weight and readily operable interiorly of the hull.
In the drawings, forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top' plan view of a ship provided with my device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged Vertical sectional detail view through a side portion thereof.
Fig. 3 is a Vertical sectional view taken upon line III- III of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 2.
My invention broadly consists of a screen or guard 10 surrounding a ship such as 11 adjustably Vmounted upon the hull 12 thereof, the said guard being normally positioned substantially Vertical in. parallelism With the adjacent side of the hull. Upright U-shaped brackets 13 are carried in spaced relations by the hull 12 having longitudinal slots 14 in their outer side or plate portion 15 while a screw 16 is journaled for rotation within each bracket 13 inwardly of the slot 14 thereof. The screw 16 at its lower end is swivelly mounted in a block 17 and is journaled in a 111g 118 adiaeeut upper end While a Pinon,
20 carried by an Operating shaft 21 jourtraveler 24 for the guard 10 is carried by the block 22' and bracket 13 which includes a tube 25 secured to the outer end of the block 22 by means of a cotter pin 26 and provided with a flange 27 slidably arranged upon the bracket plate 15. An arm 28 is attached to the upper edge of the guard 10 and has a head 29 slidably positioned within the tube 25 while a shock absorbing spring 30 is tensioned between the block 22 and the said head 29. A perforated plug 31 is arranged within the outer end of the tube 25 with the arm 28 slidably arranged therethrough. Two leg braces 32 are carried by the tube 25 supporting an aXle 33 upon which rollers 34 are mounted which travel upon the portions of the plate 15 at the opposite sides of the slot 14. An adjustable strut 35 is connected between the lower edge of the guard 10 and the arm 28 arranged with a turn-buckle 36 whereby the guard may be stretched and maintained substantially Vertical.`
From this detailed description of the invention, it will be understood that by revolving the shaft 21 from a point within the hull 12, the block 22 may be moved either up or down as desired for altering the position of the traveler 24 'and the guard 10. The guard 10 entirely surrounds the hull 12 and in this manner the same may be positioned at any desirable point adjacent the waterline thereof so as to protect the hull from oncoming missiles at points where such missiles are most likely to travel. A torpedo striking the guard 10 will have the force of its impact cushioned by the shock absorbing springs 30 which will prevent the torpeclo from exploding so that the ship will be protected. The guard 10 may be arranged at the required distance from the hull 12 so as to render any explosion ineffectual in damaging the ship if this is found desirable. A curved outwardly projecting lip 37 at the bottom of the plate 15 forms a limiting stop for the downward movement of the traveler by being pOSJlQIled Within iie in the hull 12 so that the shock absorbingkr protector or.111issi1e guard 10 inay be arranged where the same will be most effective What I claini as new is 1. A protector adapted for inounting upon thehull of a ship comprising'brackets arranged in spaced. relations upon the 111111, Operating screws journaled Within said brackets, actuating shai'ts for the saidzscrews extemding` inwardly of the 111111, vertically inovahle 'travelers carried by the brackets operatively. connected With' said screws and a missile screen carried. by the said travelei's encircling' the 111111 When operatively arranged.
EL A .protector adapted for inounting 1,1po11the 111111 of a ship comprising brackets arranged in spaced relations upon. the hull, operating screws journaled within` said brackets, ac-tuating shafts for the said scirews extending inwardly of the 111111, Vertically movable `trarclers carried by the brackets operativcly. connected With said screws, tubes carried by` said travelers, a missile screen surrounding the hull arranged outwardly of said tube's, arms connected to said screens having heads upon their inner ends slidably arranged within said tubes and cushioning` Springs Within the tubes in contact lwith said heads.
3. A. inounting means for ship protecting screens con'iprising a bracket having its outer side arranged with a longitudinal slot with a stop lip at thebottom` of the side, a screw journaled Within said 'bracket inwardly of the slot, a'block slidably arranged through. said. slot in threaded engageinent with lthe screw, Operating means fort the said screw, a tube carried by the outer ends of said block slidably engaging the said bracket side,.brace legsdependingv :from said tube, roll'ers journaled upon said -legs adapteolv :Eortrareling upon saidfbracket side in the plane of said lip, a perforated plug 111 theouter end of said tube, amounting ar111 slidably arrangedkthrough said plug, a head upon' the inner end of said arin slidably arr'fangedtwithin-the tube and a shock absoie'bing spring between the said block and` head.
In testiniony whercof I azl'fix my signature.
