Description

w. E. WHITE.
- .rvumsnhL Y AQPLICATION FILED MAY 6| 1918.

Jmimmum WILLIAM ELLIOTT WHITE, OF GRAHAM, NORTH CAROLINA.
lVIITTEN.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented A110. 2"?, 1918.
Application led May 6, 1918. Serial No. 232,738.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Graham, county of Alamance, and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a mitten which will protect the wrist and hand but leave all iingers free for any manual operations that may be required and to make this mitten in a form which will be cheap, durable and warm. These and other objects are clear by my invention, one embodiment of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth.
For a. more particular description of my invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part here of in which Figure l is a front elevation of my improved mitten.
Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views and taken on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved mitten 1 is composed of a knitted fabric 2 which is double the length of the mitten and is bent back upon itself and has its inner ends secured together by suitable stitches 3 as indicated in Fig. 2. To provide for the thumb, suitable registering slits are made and the walls of these slits are secured together by stitches 4. In the preferred embodiment of my invention, the stitches 3 and 4L are button-hole stitches which are made with an ordinary buttonhole sewing machine in the usual way.
This mitten, when made as above described, is the same for either hand and may be worn by all who have to work in cold weather as railway mail clerks, street car conductors, factory hands and the like. The device is so simple that it may be easily washed from time to time and it may be made of wool, cotton or other suitable material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A mitten composed of a tube of knitted material, folded back upon itself so as to form a tube with double walls and stitches for holding the ends of the tube together and registering slits with their edges secured together to form a thumb hole.
VILLIAM ELLIOTT VHITE.
