BOTTLE-CAPPING TOOL.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. BU- RESCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Capping Tools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bottle capping devices, and more particularly to hand tools for applying crimped caps to bottles.

The object of the invention is to provide a convenient, efiicient and practical hand tool for replacing orimped caps on bottles so as to restore the bottles to the same tightly closed condition in which they were before the caps were removed. Incidentally, my improved bottle capping tool can be so shaped as to serve also as a cap remover or bottle opener.

In order that the invention may be readily understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, the improved tool therein illustrated comprises a pair of handle members 12, pivoted together at one end, as indicated at 3. These'handles are preferably of the curved form shown so that they may be readily grasped in the palm of the hand, after the manner of pliers.

Secured to the inside of the handle members 1 and 2, and disposed between the same,

is a pair of flat,'semi-annular die members,

4 and 5., These die members lie in the same plane and are so proportioned that their ends abut when the handles are pressed together.

The die members 4 and 5 are provided around their inner edges with a series of points or teeth 6/ The number and shape of these teeth correspond approximately with the indentations or corrugations of the bottle cap to be operated upon. Such a cap is indicated at X in dotted lines, and is shown in Fig. 3 as fitted to the mouth of a bottle, designated at Y. e p

The under face of the die members adj acent the teeth 6 is preferably beveled, as indicated at 7, so as to conform to the shape of the flaring lower edge of the cap.

The outer edge of the die members 4 and 5, on the side adjacent the pivot 3, is preferably cut away and beveled oil to form an edge 8, adapted to engage under a bottle cap and serving, in combination with those portions of the handle members 1 and 2, adjacent the pivot, as a cap remover or bottle opener, as will be obvious.

In operation, the'cap is laid in place on the bottle and the tool positioned around and over the cap, as illustrated in Fig. 3, with the teeth '6 fitting into the notches or corrugations of the cap. The tool is then grasped in the hand and the levers pressed I of tool adapted for operation with both hands. In this case, the tool comprises a' pair of levers crossed and pivoted together at 13 and forming two pairs of handles 910 and 1112. Die members 1415, similar to -the.die members 4 and 5, are secured to the levers, the point of attachment shown being between the handles 1l-12 and the pivot 13. The die members 1415 are provided with interior teeth 16, similar to the teeth 6..

In using the device shown in Fig. 4, .a pair of handles is grasped by each hand and the cap pressed down over the bottle I mouth and crimped by squeezing.

By the use of my improved tool, it will be seen that bottle caps may be easily and quickly replaced and that in this way, the same caps maybe used repeatedly. This also makes it possible to use only part of the contents of a bottleand preserve the re-v mainder indefinitely,as desired.
