Be it known that l, EvANenLos IBLAETUS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Scranton, county of Lackawanna, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Spooirflolders for Cups, '&c., of which the following is a full and clear specification.

rllhe object of this invention is to provide a cup or mug or other drinking vessel with a simple device for holding a spoon while the vessel is being carried about as well as during the act of drinking from the vessel, thereby eliminating the necessity of using a saucer or other under dish for holding the spoon.

In the drawing is shown a mug of ordinary type provided at a distance from the handle, preferably at the back (i. e., remote from the usual drinking edge), with a conveXed wall a which is made integral with the wall of the cup and tapers downwardly to an opening formed between the lower edge of the wall a and the` adjacent outer surface of the mug. This wall forms, together with the adjacent wall of the mug, a pocket or recess for the reception of the bowl-end of the spoon, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. l and 2, and the opening Z) forms a drain passage to prevent the accumulation of liquid in the pocket, which accumulation would be unsanitary, especially in view of the fact that it would be difficult to thoroughly wash out the bottom of the pocket if it were closed. Vith the pocket open at its lower end, there are no obstructions in the pocket and it may be readily cleaned by the same act which insures the rinsing of the vessel. Where the drinking vessel is provided with a handle, as in the present illustration, the spoon-poclet is pref-V erably arranged at the back edge of the vessel, so that the spoon may be held in the Specification of Letters Patent.

pocket during the act of tipping up the vessel in drinking therefrom. When the vessel is thus tipped forwardly, the spoon will rest against the side of the mug and will therefore be held against displacement from the pocket. To further prevent displacement during the act of carrying the mug about or drinking from it, the top edge of the wall a may be notched at c, at a point adjacent to the wall of the vessel, for the reception of the shank part of the handle of the spoon. This notch c may be duplicated at the other side of the spoon-pocket.

The shape and type of vessel is not material, since my invention may be applied to a great variety of vessels in which food or drink is served and which are usually accompanied by a spoon. For instance, a very exs tensive and valuable use of my invention may be had with that type of vessel in which ice cream, etc., is served at soda water fountains (as shown in Fig. 4), thus rendering it unnecessary to serve a saucer with each vessel and at the same time permit the customer to inspect the spoon before using it to insure the serving of a clean spoon.

The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically described, what is claimed as new is:

1. A vessel of the type described having an imperforate wall and provided with an integral spoon-holding pocket projecting from the exterior of said imperforate wall of the vessel, the pocket being open at its top and also at its bottom, the opening at the top being larger in area than the opening at the bottom.

2. A vessel of the type described provided with an integral spoon-holding pocket on its outside, said pocket consisting of a wall curved away from the imperforate side of the vessel and provided' with a notch in its upper edge adjacent to the wall of the vessel, the upper and lower side of the pocket being open. j
