in the Dominion of New Zealaiid, have in ers, and Antirattlers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved sash fastener or look combining means for liftin or lowering and preventing rattling of sashes of windows, and more particularly the invention relates to single sash sliding windows of any particular description.
An upwardly or downwardly sliding sash has a fastener and lifter combined made according to this invention afiixed to the inner face of each stile of the sash; each fastener and lifter combined being exactly alike, the
- one being turned upside down before being fixed without any alteration in construction; the sash thereby being held in any position so that it cannot'be raised or lowered until the fasteners and lifters are released. At the same time the fastener and lifter prevent the rattling of the Sash in the frame.
In the case of a horizontal sliding sash one sash fastener andlifter is placed on the inside of the bottom or top rail of the sash; by which means the sash is locked in any required position, at the same time preventing rattlin The invention comprises a casing or housing having a dome or hollow boss whereon the cam is pivoted. The edge of the cam is widened out or may be serrated to increase the grip. A coil spring passes around the stud forming a continuation of the pivot of the cam; one end of the spring being fixed to the stud and the other end is attached to a projection or tail piece of the cam. A lug is formed integral with the casing forming a sash lifter in conjunction with the tail of the cam and is operated by the pressure of the thumb and fingers.
' In the drawings Figure 1, is a front elevation,
Fig. 2, a side elevation, and
Fig. 3, a plan of the device fixed to the bottom corner of a window sash made to open upward. V
Fig. 4, is a reverse elevation of the device.

i er sthe i n: The casing 1 sec r itathe st le t awit d ms Jdome or hollow'b oss l is cast, stamped or otherwise formed to receive a coil spring 5; one end of which is secured to the stud 6 and the other end passes through an opening 10 in the dome or boss 4, and is'secured to the tail 7 of the cam 8, which is pivoted outside the boss 4: upon the end of the stud 6.
An arm 9 is formed integral with the dome or boss 4 and together with the elongated tail piece 7 of the cam 8 forms the lifter.
The positions for fixing the devices are shown in Fig. 5 on a sash which opens upward, and in Fig. 6 on a horizontal sliding sash. In Fig. 5 the devices are fixed near the bottom of the stiles of the sash; one on each side of the sash that on the one side being upside-down to that on the other side.
being lowered after it has been raised and the cam gripping the jamb 12 preventing the sash from bein raised from any position; both cams'pressing against the jambs preventing the sash from rattling. On the sash which opens downward the devices are fixed upon the stiles near the top of the sash as shown by dotted lines inFig. 5, and the raising and lowering and rattling of the sash is prevented in the same manner as when the devices are fixed on the lower end of the stiles of the sash.
On a sash which slides horizontally the device is placed on the bottom or top rail of the ash and the cam presses upon the running strip of the frame 14L effectually locking the sash when it is closed or when the sash is placed in any predetermined position.
In operation, when it is required to raise or lower a sash or to slide a horizontal sash the arm 9 and the tail piece 7 are gripped by the fingers and thumbs, the tail piece 7 pressed toward the arm 9 withdrawing the "has lugs by which" it is 2; .6., ni.e1evati n: f a. heather is 80 against the jamb 11 preventing the sash from 1 Y horizontal sliding sash can he slid along. When the tail piece 7 is released the resiliency of the coil spring 5 presses the cam against the jambs and prevents the sash being lowered, slid or raised as the case may be, 1'
The cams 8 ma have a serrated edge 13 to give an increasec grip.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 'is:
A device of the class described, consisting of a casing comprising a hollow boss having a portion of its side cut away to provide an opening, and havinglugs for securing it to a window sash, a stud passing through said loose, a member exteriorl'y pivoted on said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. 0.
stud, having an operating handle and having a cam surface adapted to engage the surface of a window jamb, a lifting member in tegral with saidhoss, a helical spring coiled around said stud within the boss, having one end held by the stud and the other end extending through said opening in said boss and engaging said operatin handle.
In testimony whereof I ave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses. I
