W. F. MESSITER. uospnowen. APPLICATION FILED JULY 7, l9l6- RENEWED JAN. IL 1918- I ,%75 ,O68 Patented Aug.- 6, 1918.-
WILLIAM E. MESSITER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HOSE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
Application filed July 7, 1916, Serial No. 107,983. Renewed January 12, 1918. Serial No. 211,673.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MESSITER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hose-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device applicable to a fire hose for facilitating the handling thereof particularly in elevated positions as on ladders, etc, to minimize the risks incurred by firemen due to the vibration of the hose nozzle under conditions involving the discharge of water under high pressure.
Further objects and advantages of the in vention will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions and details of the illustrated construction may be resorted to within the terms of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the holder applied to a hose as seen as used for a support for the latter on a ladder.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the use of the holder in connection with a window sill or similar object.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the holder.
Fig. 4 is a detail side view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the latch and holding cam.
The holder consists essentially of a clamp having the members 10 and 11 adapted to encircle a hose and pivotally connected as at 12, said members respectively being pro-- vided with handles or. hand holds 13 which may be grasped respectively by the fireman manipulating the hose, said members of the clamp being secured at the desired adjustment relatively to properly engage the hose by means of a ratchet latch 14 pivotally mounted as at 15 and engaged with a rack 16 on the other member, said latch being held after adjustment in engagement with the rack by means of a locking cam 17.
Carried with the clamp and preferably formed integral with one of the members thereof is an object engaging device consisting in the construction illustrated of a hook 18 which is adapted to be engaged with the rung of a ladder or with the edge of a window sill, or when the hose is being operated from the ground, with any suitable and convenient object as a means of aiding the fireman in holding the hose nozzle in the desired position and relieving strain due to overcoming the vibrations thereof.
The convenience derived from the location of a hook between the hand holds is that in the event that the firemen are manipulating the nozzle without engagement of the holder with a fixed object, any sudden variation in the force of the discharge causing an increased vibration of the nozzle may be counteracted by quickly engaging the hook with a nearby obj ect, such precaution serving as a means of protecting the firemen and preventing their being thrown from the v ladder or other elevation.
The holder may also be utilized as a means for elevating the nozzle end of the hose as, for example, by means of a tower or extension ladder, the hook being engaged with a suitable rung near the upper end of the topmost section of the tower or ladder.
What is claimed is A hose clamp comprising a pair of rigid semi-annular members, one of which is provided at one end with a hook the bill of which extends substantially parallel to the axis of the clamp, all portions of the hook lying between the prolonged end faces of the clamp to facilitate the sliding of the clamp across the object wherewith the hook is to be connected; a pivot element mounted in the butt portion of the hook and in the adjacent end of the other member of the clamp; and a latch mechanism forming a releasable connection between the free ends of the clamp; the members of the clamp being provided with opposed loop-shaped handles disposed in a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of the clamp.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. MESSITER.
Witnesses:
FREDK. COBB, EDWARD F. CURRAN.
