IMPROVEMENT 1N WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,485, dated June 4, 1872.

Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Washin g-Machines, invented by ANTON HOCHWEBER, of Troy, in the county of Perry and State of Indiana.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, being so constructed that it will wash the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring even the most delicate fabrics; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the ma-y chine, as hereinafter more fully described.

A is the base-frame of the machine, to the middle parts of the side bars of which are attached the vlower ends of two uprights, B, which are secured in position by braces C. In the upper ends of the uprights B are formed notches to receive the gudgeons D attached to the middle of the sides of the box E. The box`E is made rectangular in form, and to one of its ends are attached levers or bars F to serve as handles in operating the machine. 'Io the inner sides of the ends of the box E are attached blocks G, corrugated transverse ly upon their inner sides, and which are made thicker at their upper than at their lower sides, as shown4 in Fig. 2. H is the beater, formed by attaching the ends of a series of boards or planks, placed at a little distance apart, to two upright boards. The lowest board or plank is made the widest, and its side edges are beveled oit' upon their upper sides. Each succeeding upper board is made narrower than the preceding lower board, and has its side edges beveled ofi' upon both the upper and lower sides. The sides of the beater H are thus made inclined,which inclination should be exactly equal to that of the blocks Gr, and the edges of the horizontal boards or planks of the beater H and the corrugations or grooves of the blocks G shouldv be so ar ranged that the said edges may enter the said corrugations. I is the cover of the box E, which is made in three parts. The two end parts are securely attached to the end parts of the said box E. The middle part of the cover I is hinged at one edge to the edge of one of the end parts, and its other edge is secured to the other end part of the said cover by a button or other convenient fastening.

In using the machine the clothes to be washed are divided into two parcels, which are placed in the box E upon the opposite sides of the beater H. A sufficient amount of wav ter and soap are then put in, and the box is oscillated upon its pivots, the beater H passing from end to end of the box and compressing the clothes between the beater H and the blocks G alternately. As the beater H moves in either direction the water` rushes through the spaces between the horizontal boards or planks of said beater upon the clothes in the rear of the beater, and thus assists in washing them.

Tothe under side of the beater H are pivoted rollers J, which roll along rails or tracks K attached to the bottom of the box E, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the said beater may move easily. The box E is held stationary while putting in and taking out the clothes by a bar, L, one end of which is pivoted to the base-frame A, and its other end has a hole formed in it, to be slipped upon a pin attached to the lower part of the side of the box E, near one ehd. The bar L is made of such a length that the box E may be so inclined that the water from the wringer may `flow back into the box through the opening in the middle part of its cover, the said water being kept from flowing off by narrow upwardlyprojecting flanges attached to the upper part of the sides and ends of said box.
