Description

l. RANZ.
SANITARY PILLOW. APPLICATION HLED IAN. I7. 1917- 1,274, 595 v Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
. JACOB RANZ, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SANITARY PILLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
' Application filed January 17, 1917. Serial No. 142,797.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB RANZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of .St. Louis, lllissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Pillows, of which the tion.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in sanitary pillows, and has for its object a woven body constructed of a resilient matefollowing is a specificarial and so formed as to retain its proper shape but yet provide comfort to the head, and a suitable covering placed over the same for incasing the body, which covering is so constructed as to be removed. and replaced for cleansing purposes.
A further object of my invention is to construct a pillow which is absolutely sanitary, its body so shaped and designed as to give comfort to the user, sufficiently resilient as to normally return to its original position when the weight of the head is removed; and in the body may be inserted suitable ingredients of a medicated nature when the pillow is to be used for invalids or unhealthy persons.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention with a part of the cover or casing broken away showing the resilient body.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3, is a central longitudinal sectional view. 7
In the construction of my invention I provide a pillow consisting of a body portion constructed of a reticulated material such for example as a hardened screen 4, the ends of the frame are bent inwardly approximately at right-angles forming flanges 5, the corners 6 being sufliciently rounded so as to prevent injury to the person as well as to preferably rounded, elliptical or oval as found most adaptable to the comfort of the person. In the illustration we show the shape approximately oval which is believed will best conform to the head and shoulders of the person using the same.
The body is corrugated in a manner as that shown in Fig. 3. These corrugations being of such dimension as foundmost desirable and the purpose of the corrugations is to give the resilient body a reasonable movement inwardly to conform with the head, without moving the ends. In addition to this the in-turned flanges 5 provide sufficient stiffness and rigidity to support the ends from collapsing.
The pillow is especially designed to dispense with the usual filler such as feathers, moss, and the like, of which the ordinary pillows are now constructed. It is light and soft and when the pillow is used by unhealthy persons the interior of the pillow may be packed or partially packed with herbs, or a light filler provided with medicinal properties so that the person may properly inhale the odors expelled from the medi- Having fully described my invention what I I claim is:
A sanitary pillow constructed of a sheet of woven spring wire, the body portion of the sheet being bent into corrugations, the ends of the sheet being connected together forming an oval-like hollow body, the outside edges of the body being turned inwardly to provide additional rigidity to the body, and a casing of fabric placed over the woven body the ends being laced together, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB RANZ.
