ROLL-PAPER ATTACHMENT FOR '.l*YIE-WRITIEIRS.v
Specification oifjletters Patent.
Application filed March 8, 1918' Serial No. 221,279.
To all whom z't may concern: 4
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. HALL, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at National Stock Yards, in the countyof St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Roll-Paper Attachments for Type-Writers,
of which the following is a specification containing a lfull, clear, and exact description, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to roll-paper attachments for typewriters, and it consists in the parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved attachment for typewriters, whereby roll-paper of any desired width may be convenient] held upon the typewriter in position or instant use, without the necesslty of placing separate sheets in the machine every time, the operator desires to use it, thereby effecting a great saving of time and expense.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved roll-paper attachment in position upon a typewriter of one form, the latter being shownonly in dotted lines, and partly broken away to economize in drawing space.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my attachment, the section being taken at a point about midway of the length of the attachment, and
Fig. 3 is a pers ective view of myl attachment, devoid o the roll of paper, and detached from the typewriter.
In the present illustration of my invenf tion, I provide-a suitable frame composed of two parallel horizontal rods 1 and 2, and two end plates 3, which are fixed tothe ends of said rods and spaced apart thereby, whereby the end plates will be sufficiently far apart to allow any desired width of paper to pass between them .whenunwound' from the roll vof paper 4.
The roll of paper 4 may be of any common form, and of any desired .width and quality, and it is provided with the usual roll or core 5 having end-pintles 6 which rest on the bottom of slots 7 formed in the said endplates 3, for the convenientmunting of the roll of paper upon said frame of my attachment. e
Integral ears 8 having recesses 9 in their under sides-*or edges are' formed upon the vunder edges of the said end-plates, so that Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
the said ears will rest upon the curved edge A of the typewriter paper-table l0, to support the principal weight of the attachment and the roll of paper 4 carried thereon.
Integral forwardly and downwardly extending arms 1l are formed onthe front edges of the said end-plates 3, and the front portions of said arms are provided with alined slots 12, in which is located the usual horizontal carriage rod 14 ofthe typewriter,
for the purpose of detachably securing the said slotted ends of said arms tothe carriage of the typewriter. p
Thumb-screws 15 are threaded through the overhanging edges of the said arms 11, to secure the said carriage rod 14 in isaid slots-v 12, after the attachment has been placed upon the typewriter, and which screws may be readily withdrawn when it is desired to remove the attachment and use the typewriter in writing upon separate sheets of paper in the usual manner. A substantially vertical written-matter support 16 has a supporting-shank or arm 17 at about the middle of its length, and a sleeve 18 is fixed to the rear end of the said arm 17- and loosely mounted to slide upon the said front one 2 of the said horizontal rods of the attachment frame. y
A suitable set-screw 19 isthreaded into the side of said sleeve 18, to .engage the said horizontal rod 2, and securely clamp said sleeve upon said rod at any point in the eX- posed length of the latter, in adjusting the position of the said written-matter support to stand beneath and in the middle of the different widths of aper .and support the written work in a su stantially vertical position in front of the operator, jfor the obvious convenience in reading the written matter, as well as tohold the written matter away from the mechanism of the machine and cause it to pass upwardlyv and rearwardly. (See Fig. 2).-
For the purpose of conveniently and quickly cutting oil the .web of paper after same has been written upon, (that is, after it has passed under the t pewriter platen 20) I rovide a horizontal linife v21 the ends of w ich are iixed to the forward ends of two parallel knife-bars 22 having slots 23 in their rearportions through which passihe projecting ends of the said front horizont-a1 -rod 2, whereby the said knife is secured to in a cutting position) parallel with the said typewriter platen 20.
Adjusting-screws 2l are threaded through the rear ends of the said knifebars,to engage the saidhorizontal rod 2 thereat, for the purpose of adjusting the said knife 21 with respect to the platen 20, as well as to permit the written web of paper to be cut or torn off at any desired point in the writing, and also to adapt the knife to the platens of different typewriters.
The operation of my invention will be obvious to those skilled in the manufacture and use of typewriting machines, and need 'not 'be further described.
l'Suitable nuts 25 are mounted upon the projecting ends of the said horizontal rod 2 exterior of the said knife-bars, to prevent the latter from spreading apar,t and to retain them in position upon said rod.
1. An improved roll-pa er attachment for typewriters, consisting o a suitable frame having two parallel longitudinal rods and parallel endfplates; said end-plates having slots for the insertion of the pintles of a roll of paper and having recessed ears on their under edge, for resting upon the rear paper support of a typewriting-machine; parallel arms extending from the forward edges of the said end-plates; clamping-means at the forward ends of said arms for engaging a carriage-rod of a typewriter; forwardly-projecting knife-arms having their rear portions pivotally and adjustably connected to the said arms; and a knife fixed upon the forward portions of the said knifearms.
2. In a roll-paper attachment for typewriters, the combination with a horizontal rod thereof, of a sleeve loosely mounted to slide thereon; a set-screw threaded into said sleeve; and a written-matter supporting-device carried by the said sleeve in the rear of the written Work as it is discharged from the typewriter platen.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT E. HALL.
