Springs 30 are mounted upon said rods between the cover and the follower, so that the follower will feed the paste toward and through the opening 25. lVinged nuts 31 are threaded upon the rods so as to regulate the expansion of the spring. A roll of wall paper 32 is mounted upon the shaft or spindle 33 of the easing or frame 1, and the paper from the roll passes over the rollers 34 which are mounted upon the shafts or rods 35) over the roller 36 of the shaft 37, and thence over the rollers 15 and 16 of the shafts 38 and 39, respectively. Pivoted upon the nut headed lugs 4() of the opposite sides of the frame or casing 1, are the arms 41, in bearings of which, by means of the pins 42, the opposite ends of the shaft 43 are mounted. Springs 44 are connected to the pins 45 of the opposite sides of the casing 1, and their other ends are connected at 46 to said arms 41. These springs serve to hold the roller 47 (which is journaled upon the shaft 43) against the figured or ornamented face of the wall paper at a point between the rollers 34, whereby the wall engaging face of the paper engages across the opening 25 of the receptacle 17, in order to receive its supply of paste. The opposite side walls of the casing 1 are cut away, as shown at 48, to permit of a requisite movement of the shaft or rod 43 of theroller 47. Extending transversely of the casing 1 and having their pintles 49 engaging bearings of the opposite sides of the casing 1, are rods 50. Adjustably secured upon the rod 50 by the set bolts 51 are cutting disks 52, the cutting edges of which are so beveled and overlapped, that the selvage edge of the paper, as it is drawn from its roll and being applied to the wall, may be trimmed or severed. The cutting disks may be adjusted toward either side of the casing. A tubular guide 53 extends transversely of the casing and has its opposite ends secured to the side walls of the casing, whereby its tubular passage may open through the side walls. The tubular guide has a guide slot 54, and mounted in the tubular passage of the tubular guider is a carrier 55 provided with a double edged cutting knife 56. As shown in.Figs. 6 and 7 the cutting knife is provided with double cutting edges 56"L and 56", and these edges are so constructed that when the knife is moved in one direction or the other by `imparting a Steady and medium -pull on theknife, one or the other of the cutting edges will out or so score the paper as to permitthe same to become severed without tearing. A suitable cord 57 is attached to an eye 58 of the carrier 55 and passes through one of the forks 4 of the handle. A second cord 59 is attached to an opposite eye 60 of said carrier and passes through the other fork 4. These two cords 57 and 59, respectively, pass through the openings 8 of the forks, and then through the openings 3 of the handle, and at the lower end, not shown of the handle, the other ends not shown of said cords merge together to form a loop. The cords 57 and 59, where they leave the openings of the opposite ends of the tubular guide,%ngage over the arms G1, which have smooth surfaces in order to minimize the wear and tea-r on the cords. In using the machine, paper suffe cient to pass over the rolls 15 and 16 with paste thereon is pulled from the roller paper, the paste having been applied by passing over the opening 25. The paste containing side of the paper is then applied either to the base of the side wall or at one end of the ceiling, then the machine is rolled over the wall the paste being applied at the same time and the selvage trimmed. .When the machine reaches the top of the side wall or the other end of the ceiling, the operator pulls either one of the cords 57 and 59, thereby imparting a reciprocating motion to the knife carrier, the knife acting to sever the requisite length of paper for the wall.
The invention having beenset forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a wall paper hanging machine, a
`of wall paper and provided with a paste receptacle having a paste outlet opening over which said paper passes, a spring tensioned roller bearing on the paper and holding it over said opening, whereby the paste may adhere thereto, and means for feeding the paste toward and through the outlet opening on to the paper.
3. In a wall paper hanging machine, a casing, wall papering rollers journaled therein, said casing having means to support a roll of wall paper and provided with a paste receptacle having a paste outlet opening over which said paperpasses, a spring tensioned roller bearing on the paper and holding it over said opening, whereby the paste may adhere thereto, and means for feeding the paste toward and through the outlet opening on the paper, said feeding means comprising a follower in said receptacle provided with a `gasket riveted toits face, said gasket having its marginal portions bent over Athe edges ofthe follower and engaging the inner faces of the sides of the receptacle, threaded guide rods on the follower peneiso trating through and guided in the cover of the receptacle, a cover for said receptacle, springs upon the rod between said cover and the follower, and thumb nuts threaded on the rods and adapted to be adjusted, whereby the expansion of the springs will act to Jfeed the paste toward and through the opening.
4. In combination with a wall paper hanging machine, a casing, a hollow handle having hollow forks pivoted to said casing, said casing having a transverse tubular guide provided with guide slots, a carrier in said tubular guide and provided with a doubled edged knife extending through and guided in the slot, a pair of cords connected to 0pposite ends of the carrier and passing through the tubular forks and brought together and passed through the hollow handle, whereby, as one or the other of said cords is pulled, the carrier is moved in one direction or the other.
