To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS RooMAN and FRANK M. STEVENSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, and Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania respectively, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carry-Irons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description thereof.
This invention relates to carry irons, and more particularly to carry irons adapted to be secured to a center sill of a car to support the forward end of a coupler shank.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to form carry irons of such shape and construction that they may be made entirely of forgedmetal, and still be of such strength and resiliency as to be far superior to any carry irons heretofore constructed.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a carry iron of the class described which will consist of very few parts, and so be cheaper to manufacture, more durable and less liable to become out of order.
Another object of our invention is to provide chafing plates or stops, which will limit lateral movement of the coupler shank.
It will be readily understood that various changes in design and details of structure may be made within the skill of the ordinary mechanic in the art, Without departing from our invention as defined in the appended claim.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the device as a Whole which is held between sill members 1. Our improved carry iron or saddle member A is composed of forged metal and comprises a bottom or base 2 and upright arm Specification of Letters Patent.

It will also be understood that while the angle provides supporting and securing flanges for supporting the device in position, it also adds materially to the strength of the device and permits a lighter construction than would be possible if such angle shape were not used.
Chafing plates or stops 4 of angle construction are secured to the flanges of the upright arms 3 which extend within the sill by bolts 5 passing through apertures 6. The bolts 5 also pass through the sills 1 and serve to secure the whole device in position.
The device is adapted to support and carry the forward end of a shank of a coupler 7 which is adapted to have a sliding movement thereon, and the shank 8 of the coupler is adapted to engage the stops 4 to limit the movement thereof.

Having thus described our invention, What We claim is:
The combination with a center sill for a railway car, of a substantially U-shaped carry iron for couplers composed of forged metal, said carry iron being angle shaped in cross section and having its one flange disposed vertically over the end edge of said center sill and its other flange directed longitudinally along the inner face of said sill so as to support the device, and means for securing said carry iron in position on said center sill.
