W. M. PRICHA'RD. ATTACHMENT FQR MULLER GINS.

INVEWTOR WTURNEY nnirnn snares en ran e oninon WILLIAM MATHEW PRICHARD, OF OOOLEDfiE, TEXAS.
'ATTACHMENT FOR. HULLER-GE1$IE.
Application filed February 12, 1918. Serial No. $216,712. i
To all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that I, WViLLiiM MATHEW PRICI-IARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cooledge, in the county of Lime 5 stone and State of Texas, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in At tachments for Hnlle1:'-Gin.s, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cotton gins and in such connection it; has
particular reference to an attachn'lent for that type of cotton gin known as the holler gin wherein the cotton is positively fed or forcedto or upon the ginsaws prior to its entrance to the roll box. My invention also has reference to the construction, or-
rangement and location of such an attach-- ment.
In the operation of cotton gins as new constructed considerable difficulty is expert elced in properly feeding the gin and in conducting the cotton after hulling into .the roll box. This difficulty is experienced particularly Where holly cotton is being ginned, as the gins are constantly choked up, the cotton is not properly freed of its hulls and does not onthat account enter the roll box,-
I necessitating constant supervision of each gin, loss of time in cleaning out the gins, and
additional labor for running" the gin. stand. The usual construction of the ordinary huller gin calls for gin saws and lint removing means in connection with the roll box, the ribs and a piclrer roll arranged at the base or bottom of the inlet to the gin The cotton under force of gravity falls upon the pi'cken roll, its hulls are thereby broken and removed from the cotton and the cotton at the same time is drawn by the saws 40 through the huller ribs into the roll box. There isiio arrangement or attachment for positively feeding; or forcing the cotton to these saws and if the cotton is holly the hulls accumulate and prevent the cotton '45 from reaching the saws in front of the 'huller ribs.
- My invention. provides a means for forcing the bully cotton to the saws immediately in front of the hnllerrihs which means con sists of a shaftupon which are'mounted a plurality of pinscin a somewhat spiral for mation'. The shaft is channeled or cut away a in spiral forum the spiral channeling, thus ,formed, separating the pins on the shaft.
155 {This-shaft cooperates Wit the saws in the drawing ofthe cotton by r saws through with the picker roll in drawing the hulls Patentedilnlyfig,1918;
the ribs into the roll box and also cooperates i out of the cotton and discharging same i from the gin. i i i The op'ration and construction of my in-' vention will be more fully understood from the following description taken. in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof in Which:
Figure l is a cross sectional view take through a holler gin of the usual type showing my invention embodied therein.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the shaft showing the arrangement of the pins and the channel or groove of the shaft. T
Fig. is a plan view showing the continnation of the pin arrangement and grooves around the shaft.
Fig. 4 is a view taken from the opposite side of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is an end elevational view. I
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 representsthe inlet to a hnller gin, 2 the roll box 8 the saws, d-the brush for re- 86 moving; lint roni the saws, 5 reg'n'esents the seed ribs and 6 the holler ribs which are all of Well known. construction and arrang nient. Tie the discharge opening of the inlet 1. wherein is arranged a picker roll 8 the teeth or pins 9 of which are arranged slightly tangential to the periphery of the roll.
The'roll 8 in revolving presents the back or obtuse angled portion of the pins 9-to the 9 saws 3 and the pins traverse the bully cotton with a combing like movement to draw out the hulls frl'in'i the fiber and discharge same through outlet 7.
the saw cylii'ider. In its revolution the shaft 10 presents the points or ends of the pins 11.
'to the saws 3 and also to the pins 9 of the picker roll 8 the picker rollre'volving in the same direction as the shaft 10. i V
The pins 11 of the shaft id-enter the .hully cotton with. a comhing action and present or feed the fiber forcibly to the saws, The
are
pins also separate the hulls from the cotton and dragthese hulls into operative osition with respect to the pins 8 of the pic er roll The spiral groove ofshaft 10 permits 5 the bully cotton to travel with the shaft in the presentation of the entire hully cotton to 1tlhg ribs 6 before the hulls reach the picker r0 Having thus described the nature and ob- 10 jects of my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a huller gin, in combination with the roll box, the saws, the ribs and a picker roll, of a revoluble shaft with spiral grooves having pins mounted on the ridges between the grooves at right angles to the periphery of the shaft, said shaft arranged adjacent to the saws and between the roll box and picker rolland said pins presenting their points to the saws during the rotation of said shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM MATHEW PRIOHARD.
