To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. EnwAnns, a citizen of the United States residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iVater-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved water heater for use in connection with an automobile and the principal object of the invention is to provide a waterheater which is so constructed that the water leading from the engine through the radiator may be heated and thus freezing of the water pre vented in cold weather.
Another object of the invention is to pro- Vide a water heater which will be small and may be placed in the engine hood and to further so construct this water heater that it may be supplied with fuel from a gas tank placed in the body of the automobile at a convenient point.
Another object of the invention is to provide a water heater so constructed that it may be taken apart for cleaning purposes when so desired.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the water heater that the water will surround the gas passage or tube in the body of the heater and thus permit the water to be easily and quickly heated while passing through the body of the heater.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the heater in side elevation, and,
Fig. 2 is a view showing the heater in ver tical section.
This heater is provided with a hollow body 10 having upper and lower caps 11 and 12 screw-threaded upon the hollow body and having the pipes 13 and 14 communicating therewith the pipe 13 being an outlet for the heated water and the pipe 141 being an inlet pipe for the cold water. This inlet pipe 14 leads from the water manifold of the engine and the pipe 13 will lead to the bottom neck of the radiator of an automobile. It will thus be seen that the water passing from the engine manifold to the radiator will pass through the heater and thus become per and lower caps and communicates at its upper end with a union 16. A collar 17 is screwed upon the extended lower end of this tube or gas passage 15 and forms a support for the burner housing 18, the walls of which are provided with openings 19 to admit air to the burner housing. This burner housing is provided with a socket 20 from which extends a nipple 21 for connection with a pipe leading from a storage tank thus permitting gas to enter the socket 20 and pass out through the nipples 22 and into the burner tip 23. The storage tank (not shown) will be placed at a convenient point upon the automobile and the conduit pipe will be carried forwardly into the engine hood and connected with the nipple 21 so that the gas will enter the burner tip 23 and may be ignited. The gases from the burning gas will pass through the gas passage or tube 15 and the water in the body or water chamber 10 will be heated and will circulate through the radiator and through the engine manifold thus keeping the water from freezing. It is of course understood that this heater will only be used when the car is standing still or put away for the night. It would not be necessary when the automobile is in use as the engine of the automobile would keep the water heated.
What is claimed is i 1. A water heater con'lprising a tubular body, upper and lower caps for the body, the lower cap being provided with a water inlet and the upper cap with a water outlet, a heater tube passing through the body with its upper and lower end portions threaded into openings in the caps and extending beneath the lower cap, a collar threaded upon the lower end of the heater tube beneath the lower cap, a burner housing threaded upon the collar and provided with a fuel inlet, and a burner in the burner housing communicating with the fuel inlet.
2. A water heater comprising a hollow body having a closed upper end and a closed lower end and provided with a water inlet adjacent the lower end and a water outlet adjacent the upper end, a heater tube passing through the body and extending beneath the lower end thereof, a collar upon the lowerend of the heater tube a burner housing connected with the collar to inclose the lower end of the tube and provided With a fuel inlet, and a burner in the burner housing communicating with the fuel inlet.
