BYRON IE. WILLETT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed. October 8, 1917. Serial No. 195,285.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON P. VVILLETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to toys and has special reference to a rattle or sounding toy for producing crepitating sounds or succession of sharp taps, such a toy being used on New Years eve, Fourth of July and other holidays, festival occasions and celebrations in general.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a toy of the above type wherein novel means is employed for successively actuating a clapper board or member relatively to the toy body, so that sharp taps are emitted thereby.
Another object of my invention is to provide a toy of the above class that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efi'icient for producing noise.
The above and other objects are attained by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of the preferred form of toy;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away and partly in section;
Fig. 3 is a plan of a modified form of y;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the same, partly in section;
Fig. 5 is a slde elevation of a detached rotary member, and
Fig. 6 1s a cross sectional v1ew taken on the line VIVI of Fig. 2.
The toy comprises an oblong body 1 prefer-,
ably made of wood and adjacent one end of said body is an opening 2 communicating with a slot 3 extending to the end of the body in the longitudinal axis thereof. One face of the body 1, at an end of the opening 2, has a recess 1 communicating with the opening 2, and this recess is essential in order that a clapper'board or member 5 may produce a loud tap or noise. The clapper member 5 is in the form of a thin board extending over the recess a and the end of the opening 2,
one end of the clapper member overlying the slot 3 and the opposite end thereof loosely held on a nail or pin 6 carried by the body 1. A bowed spring 7 has one end thereof fixed relatively to the body 1 and is further held by the nail or pin 6 said spring having the free end thereof bearing on the clapper member 5 to hold said member normally in engagement with said body.
A yoke or stirrup 8 carried by the body 1, adjacent the recess 4, limits the opening movement of the clapper member 5 and prevents lateral displacement of the free end of said member.
Journaled in the slotted or bifurcated end 1 is a spindle 9 having one end thereof provided with suitable handles 10 so that the toy may be held and the body 1 swung about the spindle as an axis. That portion of the spindle 9, in the slot of bifurcation 3, is rectangular in cross section so that an actuating member 11 may be mounted thereon and held for rotation with the spindle. The
rotary actuating member is made of sheet metal and comprises a plurality of diverging arms 12 having longitudinal stiffening flanges 13 with the outer ends of said flanges rounded, as at 14 so as to impinge against the inner face of the clapper member 5 without injury to the same. The rotary actuating member is held in proximity to one of the walls of the slot or bifurcation 3 by a coiled compression spring 15 encircling the spindle within the slot 3. The slot 3 provides clearance for the rotary actuating member and this member is considered to rotate when the body 1 is held in one hand and the spindle 9 rotated with the other hand, but in actual practice, the handle 10 will be held stationary in the hand while the body 1 is swung thereabout thus causing the clapper member to successively impinge against the arms 12 and produce successive crepitatin sounds.
A modi cation of my invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 1 andconsists of a body 16 having an opening 17 and a recess 18. The body is devoid of the slot 3 and on the recessed face of said body is an angularly disposed clapper member 19 that is held against lateral movement by a nail or pin 20 and is held normally in engagement with the recessed face of the body by a coupling pin 21 and a coiled retractile spring 22. The coupling pin 21 extends into a recess of the body 16 and has a head engaged by the the recessed face of said spring 22, said spring yieldably holdingthe clapper member so that the outer end of said member may be actuated to rebound against the body 16 and produce a sound. To accomplish this, a spindle 23 having a handle 24 is j ournaled in the apertured end of the body 116 and on the outer end of the spindle- 23 is an actuating member 25 similar to the member 11. This actuating member is adapted to be engaged by the protruding edge of the clapper member 19, as best shown in Fig. 3.
It is thought that the operation of the toy will. be apparent Without further description, and While in the drawings there are illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the the recessed face of said body, a spindle journaled in one end of said body, an actuating member mounted thereon adapted to be engaged by said clapper member when said body is swung about said spindle as an axis.
2; A toy of the class describedcomprising a body havingan opening therein and a face provided Witha recess communicating with the opening, a clapper member nor mally against the recessed face of said body, means at one end of said body for holding one end of said clapper member so that said cla 'iper member may be shifted relative to said body to rebound thereagainst, a spindle journaled in one endof said body, and an actuating member carried thereby, adapted to be engaged by the free end of said clapper member When said body is swung about said spindle as an axis.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
