CURRENT-MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application led October 23, 1916, Serial No. 127,195. Renewed June 13, 1918. Serial No. 239,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORA SoNNERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cody, in the county of Park and State of Wyoming, have invented a new and useful Current-Motor, of which the following' is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a current motor of novel construction arranged to produce a reciprocating action which is utilized in operating a reciprocating pump or the like. It is a further object of my invention to provide a novel combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrative of the invention, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention as it appears at the middle of the stroke; Fig. 2 is a top plan of same; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a suitable arm 1 to the ends of which are fastened vanes 2 and 3. Arm 1 is suitably secured by bolt 6 to link 7, which in turn is pivotally attached to link S by member 9. Link 8 is secured to a suitable bolt 10 which extends through beam 11, in which it is loosely mounted. To the upper end of bolt 10 is connected a connecting rod 14 by means of arm 12 which is fastened to the bolt 10 by suitable fastening members 13. A rocker vane 4 having a reinforcing member 5 on its upper portion is secured to link 7 in a position at right angles to that of vanes 2 and 3.
The motor is illustrated in Fig. 1 at the middle of its stroke with vane 3 submerged and traveling downstream while vane 2 is out of the water and traveling in an opposite direction. The edge of rocker vane 4 is directly in line with the current when the motor is at the middle of its stroke as shown in this view. When vane 3 has traveled to a position about 45 degrees from that illustarted in Fig. 1, the increasing force of the water moving against rocker vane 4 as it is turned to a position to oppose the current causes vane 3 to leave the water and vane 2 to submerge. The device then commences to operate in a reverse direction to that just described, vane 2 traveling downstream until the rocker vane 4 has been turned about to a suicient extent to again bring vane 3 into action. Arm 1 which is thus given a reciprocatory motion likewise reciprocally moves links 7 and 8, bolt 10, arm 12 and connecting rod 14 which latter member actuates the pump that is operated by the motor.
What I claim is:
1. In a current motor, the combination of spaced vanes, an arm to which the vanes are fastened, a rocker vane positioned substantially midway between the aforesaid vanes and at substantially right angles thereto, a connecting rod for operatively connecting the current motor with a device to be actuated thereby, and means operatively connecting the vanes and arm to the connecting rod.
2. In a current motor, the combination of an arm, vanes attached at opposite ends of the arm, a link to which the arm is secured, a rocker vane depending below the link and positioned substantially at right angles to and approximately midwayl between the first-mentioned vanes, a second link from which the first link is pivotally suspended, and means operatively connecting the second link with and reciprocally actuating any desired machine.
3. In a current motor, the combination of an arm, spaced vanes attached to the arm, means for suspending the arm in position to submerge one of the vanes, and a rocker vane depending approximately midway between and at right angles to the spaced vanes.
4. In a current motor, the combination of a reciprocally moving connecting rod, an arm attached thereto, a supporting beam, a bolt member loosely mounted in the beam to one end of which the arm is secured, a link depending from the lower end of the bolt member, a second link pivotally suspended from the first link, an arm having spaced vanes, a rocker vane arranged approximately midway between and at approximately right angles to the spaced vanes, and means for fastening the aforesaid vanes to the second link, for the purposes described.
