Be it known that I, INEZ EMERY FITZ GERALD, a citizen of the United States,resid ing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and btate of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for maintaining clothes in the wash boiler below the level of the water.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple effective device for the above-mentioned purpose such as may be readily attached tol any wash boiler, and

which is easily removed therefrom and which effectively holds the clothes below the surface of the water.

Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of )arts herein illustrated and more specitical y pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification,

l Referring to corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, 1 denotes the wash boiler having the beaded top edge 2, and as shown in Fig. l, my improved device consists of a ring 3, covered with a wire screen 4, having certain holding clips 5.

These clips are provided with lower loop portions receiving the ring 3, and the` upper edge is'curved as shown at 6 to provide a lcontracted resilient throat, which is spread apart when the upper end of the clip is sprung over the head 2 so that it requires Y considerable effortto remove it therefrom.

Thus when in use the ring is placed in the wash boiler and the devicesV 5 positioned over the head of the boiler, thereby holding the ring and attached wire screen against upward pressure of the clothes, and permit- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ive cents each, by addressing the ting a limited vertical movement of the screen relative to the clips.

In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the ring 3 is provided with the opening 7 and the ends of the wire are at this point bent upwardly as shown at 8 and provided with loops 9, which serves as a handle to contract the ring for the purpose hereinafter described.

In this form the wire Vscreen 10 is provided, the edge of the wire being bent downwardly as shown at 11 before connecting to the ring, and adjacent the opening 7 the ends of the screen are cut of short and not fastened to the ring. By connecting the screen to the ring in this manner the ring is permitted to contract by pressure on the handles 9. This type is intended to be used in the boiler having a bead 12 around the surface thereof. The screen is inserted and removed by squeezing together the handles 9 contracting the ring 3 a sufficient amount to allow the ring to enter this bead, where it springs into position and is thus held against the upward pressure of the clothes.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple and effective means for holding the clothes in the boiler below the surface of the water, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail and design within the scope of the claims.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent:

1. A clothes holder of the character described comprising a ring havingV wire mesh INEZ EMERY FITZ GERALD.
