. DEVICE FOR OPERATING SLIDING DOORS.
in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating Sliding Doors, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention has for its object to provide improved devices for the operation of sliding" doors, such as elevator doors, wherebythe doors can be opened easily from one side, shall close automatically when rein closed position so that they cannot be opened from the other side. The invention, which is applicable to a single sliding door, to a multiple door opening from one side, and to a multiple center opening door, will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which it is illustrated in its application, in a practical form, to a multiple door opening from one side.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the application of the invention to a door.
Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views,on a larger scale, showing the locking latch indicated in Fi 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail View in section of the lower end of the cylinder check shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail View showing an embodiment of the invention slightly difierent from that shown in Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1, the wall a has secured thereto a track on which the sliding door 0 is supported in any convenient manner as by a carrier 0.
A bellcrank lever (Z,d, is pivotally mounted on a suitable bracket 03 secured to the wall, and is connected at one end with one leaf 0 of the sliding door and at the other end with a plunger by which the closing movement of the door is effected. The longer arm d of the bellcrank is provided with a suitable handle as hereinafter described, through which pressure may be applied by the operators h nd to nnlatch the Specification of Letters Patent.

door, when it is closed, and to impart to the door its openmg movement.
The other, arm cl of the bellcrank lever is connected to the means by which pressure is applied automatically to the door, through the bellcrank lever, to close it when the pressure ofthe operators hand is removed from the handle. As shown, in Fig. 1, the arm d is pivotally connected to the upper end of plunger 6', which has a sliding fit in a' cylinder f. The latter is pivotally mounted, preferably by a ball and socket 1 joint f, on a bracket f which is secured to the wall or casing of the elevator car or shaft". The cylinder f acts not only as a guide for the plunger 0 in its movements, but it operates as a check to cushion the downward movement of the plunger, which is heavy enough to effect the closing of the door when the operators hand is removed from the handle. The lower end of the cylinder f is therefore closed by a head f which is provided with an air vent f, con trolled by a screw valve f and equipped with a mufiler f". In order that the opening movement of the door, effected by the operator, may have as little resistance as possible, the head f is also provided with a check valve 7 which permits the air to enter freely during the upward movement of the plunger, but prevents the escape of air during the downward movement of the plunger and compels all of the air to pass through the vent f In Fig. 5 the long arm d of the operating lever is shown as extended beyond its pivot by a short arm 03 which is connected at its extremity with the plunger 0, by a chain at which passes over the guide wheels cl. The flexibility of the chain permit the cylinder f to be mounted upon a fixed bracket F, instead of being pivotally mounted, as shown in Fig. 1.
Connection between the bellcrank and the door 0 is effected by a link (Z which is pivoted to the long arm d of the bellcrank at one end and with the door at the other end. The long arm d of the bellcrank has a longitudinal slot 0Z which engages a pin 0 carried by the door. This slot has a weighted latch 9, provided with a handle g and with a notch g for coiiperation with the pin 0 is pivoted upon the lever d, as
@at f and has a pin-and-slot connection the door against movement.
therewith, as at 9 to limit the'movement of thelatch. The latch is'overbalanced by V thehandle g so that it stands normally in the position.shoWn in Fig. 2, ith the pin 0 engaged by the notch 9 thereby locking The pressure of the operators handupon the handle g',' in a direction to open the door, immediately Vdisengages ;the latchfrom the-pin and permits the door to be opened against the Will now he LUIdQIStOOCl Without'fur'ther explanation. - is not to be limited constructlon and arrangement shown.
I claim as my invention; 7 V I 1. An operating device for sliding doors,
comprising a lever pivoted; upon fixed point, one arm 0t said lever having a lon- I gitudmal slot'm engagement withja pin on" the door to permit the movement ofthe door With the lever and a handle pivoted on the lever and having a notch for cooperation with the pin onthe door.
2. An operating device for sliding doors coinprlsmg a lever pivoted upon ;a fixed point, one arm of said lever ha ving a lo1 1- gitudinal slotni engagement. w th a pin ,on
the door to permit movementof the door with the lever, a handle pivotedon the lever and having anotch for cooperationwith the pm on the doorand a \ve1gh'te'd plunger connected to the other arm of'said lever. i
