COMBINED WRITING-SHEET AND ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. July 9, 1918.
Application mea November 1, 1916. serieu No. 128,908.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM C. DE WENDT, a citizen of the Republic of Haiti, residing in the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Writing-Sheets and Envelops, of which the following is a specication. l
My invention relates to combined writing sheets and envelops, and its primary object resides in the provision of Va single sheet of writing paper, which may be conveniently folded and closed for transmission through the mails to accommodate either irst class or third class mail regulations, as desired.
A further object is to combine a sheet of writingpaper and envelop in such a manthat both the face of the letter and the face of the envelop shall be upon the same side of the paper, and may be printed at one impression, saving thereby double printing press work.
A further object is to provide a writing sheet and envelop combined as may be conveniently desired, which will provide ready means for inspection as third class mail matter, when mailed as such, and which shall have the general outside appearance of rst class mail matter.
A further Objectis to provide a writing sheet and envelop combined, which I shall require less paper than when' constructed separately, and which will, in consequence cost lesslfor paper; be lighter in weight; and thus permit the mailing of more sheets in each letter at the minimum rate for postage.
A further object is to provide a writing sheet and envelop combined, ywherein'the name and address Written in the usual space on the letter head may be seen, after the envelop is closed, through a suitable opening in the envelop portion, thereby avoiding double writing of such nameand address, and the mista-ke of mailing a letter in an envelop addressed to a different person, as often occurs as at present practised.
My invention consists of the improved construction of a combined writing sheet and envelop illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and in which- Figure 1 represents my invention as adapted to a writing sheet of the size of the usual business letter head, and the number six envelop, showing the face of the envelop and letter head.
Fig. 2 represents the front face view of the same writing sheet and envelop after being folded to the third position.
Fig. 3 represents the same writing sheet and envelop completely folded, the gummed iaps ready for closing either by tucking in or sealing as desired.
In Fig. l of the drawings, I have preferably shown my invention as adapted to the usual form and size of business letters, combined with the usual number six size of envelop, the whole being formed from a single sheet of paper of the desired Weight and color, the form being designed for folding and sealing as hereinafter more particularly described.
The front of the envelop portion is indicated by the numeral l, whichis preferably provided with an opening l0, to expose the name and address of the correspondent, and the end flaps 7 and 9, and the bottom flap 8, for closing and sealing as hereinafter eX- plained. The opening l0 may be covered with transparent material, if desired, or it may be omitted entirely, and the name and address written thereon in the usual manner when preferred. The flaps 7, 8, and 9 are gummed on the reverse side with adhesive for use in sealing the letter. The adhesive may be omitted from the flaps Nos. 7 and 9 when used for third class mail matter in the manner hereinafter described.
As shown in Fig. l, I have so arranged my invention that the face of the envelop and the face of the writing sheet are upon the same side of the paper. Thus it will be'seen that all printing of letter heads,
return cards, etc., may be printed upon both the writing sheet and envelop at one and the same impression, thereby saving the eXtra press work usual with other combined writing sheets and envelops, and with writing sheets and envelops detached. It will further be seen that the top of the envelop and the top of the writing sheet are in the same direction, and all printing is readable without turning the sheet, and all writing may be done upon both the writing sheet and envelop at one insertion in the typewriter, without removing and reversing as is the case with others.
After the desired printed or Written matter has been placed upon the writing sheet,
it is folded for mailing as follows: `irst, iold the top one third of the Writing sheetbackward approximately #along the ,dottedqline 10 against the rear of the portion 4; second, fold the portions 4 andf5 `-forward:approximately along the dotted line 11, againstthe `front of 'thezportion3,when the partially folded writing sheet andenvelop will bein the form shown in Fig. 2; third, "foldthe .portion shown as 6 backward, along the dottedline 1 2, against ther-ear ofthe folded portions; fourth, lfold the jfoldefd 'l portion backward along thedotted *line 13;'a02ainst the rearv of the ,portion 2 iiifth, gfild-:back- "ward again along the dottedz'line .l1l,`.. against the, rear` ol the "front .di the envelop '1. 'The folded writing-sheet ,and envelop will then resemble the illustration'shown 3,; the :na-me and address'` oir-the 'letterhealdappe'aring immediately beneath theopening f ini-the envelop front l.
To seal -thesaid 'letter vforfirst' class, mail, the-'three flapsf, 8, and 9 jare'moistened, and are turned backward, and vpressed down .Vaigainsthe rear of the tolded"letter,`guntil V:the guml adheres, thus sealing all vopen edges thelettef- I Y 'y lf, instead, it is desired to' elosesaid'ltter foi-:mailing as third classzmail inatter,.the ends and v9 .are fl'deid'baekward, and
,r -ti'lcked'in between the edges of parts 2 and 3 adjacent to them. 'The' flap 8,1naylikewise 'be' folded backward, and tucked in'between thepflded edges oit'l parts .3 ande, or itpre- 'erred, it may "be moistened,;,and ,pressed down I.against the. rear. .S'fdej ofthefolded letiter, ,andy 4gurnmed 5`fast, "orby removing the end ap" 9` from position between the .por- .tions `2 anidB, all sides y.of theinclosed matter may be inspected without other opening of` vsaid envelop.
,'It w'illz'beapparent that the parts 1 ant-1 2 Aabove may v,be the-'full widthothe' writing sheet, and` o'ld to the size lo-flargelegal .sized Venvelop without 'departing vfroinjthe A,spirit of rnyy invention; yit will' -furtherbe apparent that thepart2 may'x be `full width ofthe writ- '.ing sheet, and used for printed or'written matter'. It willflfurther 'be apparent that eithersi'ngle or doublesheetjnote. papersize maybe used in ,placeof that shownfand used are Ol'ded against., the inner sheet and andfolded in approximately the same manner without departing from the spirit of my :said li nvention.
vary the size or shape of the flaps as shown, which :will niet :materially vary from the spirit of my said invention.
Havingxthus described my inventiom'what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is `the following A combined letter sheet and envelop com- Aprising a Asiibstantially rectangular writing heet provided lat fone end with 'a relatively narrow "intermediate connecting porti'onilateral'ly 'reduced at one s'de and extending from and arranged in flush relation 'with the longitudinal ,edge -at'the other side of the let- "ter sheet and terminating 'short of,v one Yo the longitudinal edges of t ie said writing-sheet 4,t0 .fOlm ,a `relatively narrow laterally profg-j'ecting lp'ortion ,of a `Width 'materially' "less than the ,intermediate connecting portion, Vsaid {letter'- sheet being `'folded on transverse }l` ines spa.ce'd apart substantially'ilie width of the intermediate connectingA portion soas to permittheiolded'letter' sheet to overlie the .fsaijd intermediate portion, vthe relatively nar- `row`latera`lly extending portion of the writing sheet being folded,'longitudinally .of the latterintoI the areaV of theintermediate `conr neeting Y' portion and' over "the same, said in- .",terme'diate connecting pjortion constituting f-thebaek of Vthe envelop andthe envelop porv tion being located at the outer end .of the i 1 itermediate connecting portion and pro- :around the Writingsh'eetand the s aidintermediate connecting portion-'When the ,same

In testimony whereof lfhave hereunto .afixed my signature in the presence 7of two witnesses.
