To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Novnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of Vashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence Posts, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fence posts, and particularly to posts designed to support a fence at the end ofthe fence line,.or to support a gate, the post being particularly adapted for supporting gates.
One object of my invention is to provide a post of this character which is adjustable at all times and from all angles. I
Another object is to provide a fence post which can be set up or taken down at, will and which cannot sag or lean under the weight of the gate.
A further ob"ect is to provide a post of this character which can be set up, or taken down, or adjusted, without injury to its base or other parts.
A further object is to provide improved means for bracing the post against sagging.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description- My inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the post, the base being shown in section and the brace being shown partly in section and partly in elevation Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

Referring to these drawings, 10 designates the base upon which the post is mounted, this base bing preferably of cement and being T-shaped in plan, {this base being formed with a socket in the head of the T for the reception of the post 11. The post 11 is of iron pipe and is disposed within the socket. The post at its lower end carries an anchor plate 12, which is fastened by bolts 13 to the concrete base. From one of these bolts extends an adjusting rod 14, which passes through an adjusting block 15 and is provided with a nut 16. This adjusting block 15 is slidingly mounted upon the base 10 and has an upwardly and inwardly extending stud 17. A look pin 12 extends through the post and locks in a groove in plate 12.
Mounted upon the post 11 is a semi-circular collar or abutment member 18, which partly embraces the post and which is formed with an inclined face 19 having a projecting stud 20, confronting the stud 17. A tubular brace 21 is adapted to be disposed in engagement with the studs 17 and 20 as illustrated in thedrawing. The collar 18 is held to the post in any adjusted position by means of a U-shaped bolt 22, the collar being formed with an overhanging flange 23 around which the U-bolt passes. It will be obvious now that by tightening up on the bolt 16, the block-l5 may be shifted to thus brace the post and hold it in any desired position.
Disposed around the post and above the collar 18 is an adjusting plate24c somewhat elliptical in shape and having a central aperture fitting the pipe which forms the post. The under face of this plate at its ends is formed with downwardly extending lugs 25, having fiat transverse inner faces 26, and at one end of each of these lugs 25 there is formed a downwardly extending shoulder 27. The ends of the plate are bored as at 28 for brace rods 29. 'These brace rods extend downward in divergent relation and at their lower ends are formed with hooks engaging in eyes 30 embedded in the cement base. The upper ends of the rods are provided with nuts 31, whereby the rods may be placed under tension. It will be noted from Fig. 4: that the plate 24 is disposed on top of the collar 18, the thickened portions 18 at the sides of the collar are disposed immediately behind the shoulders 27, the bolts 29 )assing down just at the sides of these thickened portions so that the plate and the collar are to a degree interlocked.
A gate post constructed in accordance with this invention may be readily adjusted by adjusting the block 15 so as to hold the post at any desired angle, and then the post may be held from any sagging movement by tightening up upon the braces 29, until the post is thoroughly braced from movement in any direction. It will also be seen that the post can at any time be adjusted and that it can easily be set up or takendown. Furthermore the post may be readily adjusted or the Whole post taken down, with' out injury to the base or any of the parts of the post. The angle of the post may be readil controlled by a turning up on the hut'1'6 or a'relaxing' on this nut.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A structure of the character described including a base having a socket, a post inserted in the socket, acollar detachably mounted on the post and adjustable therealong,"a block mounted on the base and adjustable toward or from the post, a brace extending from the block to said collar, a plate through which the post passes, and
