BOILER CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, EDWARD C. MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler I Constructions, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention consists 0? an improved boiler construction, one object being to provide feed water conducting elements which are so constructed and arranged that they will greatly add to the efiiciency of the boiler.
Another object is to provide baffling means which will cause an economical circulation for the hot products of combustion and will cause them to efi'ectively heat the feed water elements and. other portions of the boiler.
. A further object is to so design my invention that it will be of comparatively simple construction.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which The figure represents a sectional elevation of an upright water tube boiler which is constructed in accordance with my invention.

A pedestal 3 is located within the casing and between this pedestal and the front wall 5, is located a wall 4. A grate 6, which may be of anysuitable construction, has a stepped upper surface 7 which forms the fuel suporting surface and extends from the front wall 5 to the wall 1.,
Two boiler units 8 and 9 are arranged within the casing 1, the boiler unit 8 comprising a plurality of water tubes 10 connecting at their top and bottom with. drums 11 and 12. The boiler unit 9 includes a plurality of tubes 13 which connect at their top and bottom with drums 1% and 15.
The drums 11 and 14 are connected by tubes 16, and the drums 12 and 13 are connected by tubes 17, it being noted that the tops of the drums 11 and 14 are also connected by a tube 18 which acts as an equalizing tube between the steam spaces of the drama 11 and it.
The drum 14' has a main steam 'pipe 19 leading therefrom. The drums 11, 12, 14, and 15, are arranged horizontally and supported within the side walls, the drum 12 being further supported by the pedestal 3. The drum 15 is also supported by a pedestal 20 which is mounted, together with ,the pedestal 3, on the floor of the casing.
The drums 11 and 12 are in different vertical planes so that the tubes 10 extend at an incline toward the front wall, 5 of the casing. This is also true of the drums 1 1 and 15 so that the tubes 13 also extend at an incline and substantially parallel with the tubes 10 of the boiler unit 8.
A baffle 22 is provided between the tubes 10 and extends upwardly from the drum 12 throughout a portion of the length of said latter tubes, stopping short of the drum 11 so as to provide a passage 21 between it and the drum 11.
Another baffle 23 is arranged tubes 13 of the boiler unit 9 and extends downwardly from the drum 14 and stops short of the drum 15 to provide a passage 24 between the lower end of the baiiie 23 and the drum 15.
A fifth drum 25 is mounted in the upper rear portion of the casing 1 and this drum has a feed water inlet pipe,26 connected therewith. A plurality of rows of feed water tubes 27 extend downwardly virom the drum 25 and connect with the drum 15. These tubes 27 are located between the rear tubes 13 ofihc boiler unit 9 and the rear wall 28 of the (using 1. In operation. the products of combustion bass upwardly from the tire box 31 into coin tact with the tubes 10 of the boiler unit 8, which are forward of the bafilc They then pass through the passage 21. prm'ided between the. top of the baiilc 22 and the drum 11. After passing through the pasas e 21 said roducts ass downwardl' be r between the taking a-particular form, it will be mu tween the bafiies 22 and 23 to heat the rear tubes of the boiler unit 8 and the forward tubes of the boiler unit 9. These products are prevented from passing downwardly between the drums 12 and 15 by a baffle arch 32 which rests on the upper tubes 17 and extends between the drums 12 and 15.
These products are thus compelled to pass through the passage 24 and upwardly between the rear face of the baffle 23 and the forward face of the bafiie 29 in order to heat 'the rear tubes 18 and to engage the drum 25 heated to a high temperature prior to entering the boiler, units proper. This adds greatly to theetfic-iency of the boiler and to its capacity as a. steam generator. In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated three rows of tubes 27, however, it will be understood that a greater number of rows may be used if desired.
l/Vhile I have illustrated a boiler including two boiler units, it will be understood that any number of units may be inserted within the casing without departing from the spirit of my invention.
While I have described my inventioii as icrstood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise constrlu-tion set forth. but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the-appendtal claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is:
1. The combination in a boiler of acasing; a boiler unit within. said casing; an independent feed water drmn within the top of said casing; means for conducting feed water to the drum. said boiler unit having an uppc and a lower drum connected by tubes,
said lower drum being mounted below said independent feed water drum; a pluralityof tubes connecting the lower drum of the boiler unit with said feed water drum; a ballie leading downwardly from the upper drum of the boiler unit and supported by the 4 tubes thereof, said baflie stopping short of the lower drum to provide a passage for the products of combustion; and a second battle extending from sald lower drum toward said feed water drum. and located to the rear ofsaid first bafiie and passage and in front of the tubes connecting with the feedwater drum, said second mentioned bafiie stopping short of the feed water drum to provide a passage for the products of combustion between said latter tubes and between said second mentioned bafiie and the rear of the independent feedwater drum; a plurality of tubes connecting the lower drum of the boiler unit with said feed water drum; a battle leading downwardly from the upper drum of the boiler unit and supported by the tubes thereof. said battle stopping short of the lower drum to provide a passage for theproducts of combustion; a second baflie extending from said lower drum toward saidv feed water drum and located to the rear of said first battleand passage and in front .of the tubes connecting with the feed water drum, said second mentioned battle stopping short of the feed water drum. to provide a passage for the products of combustion between said latter tubes and between said second menlionedlmfiie and the rear of the casing, said casing having an outlet passage for the products of combustion below and to the rear of said second mentioned passage; a second boiler unit within said casing and located to the front of said first boiler unit, said second boiler unit including an upper and lower drum connected by tubes: and a ballle extending upwardly from said latter lower drum and stopping short of the upper drum of said secondunit, substantially as described.
