Description

NEEDLE FOR TALKWG MACHINESv APPLICATLON FILED ma 4. :aw.

I h M ANTON H. RIN'IELMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NEEDLE FOR TALKING-MACHINES.
Application filed January 4,1915.
To aZl whom it may roman-n.
Be it known that I. AN'roN H. Rm'rnn Man, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and. State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles for 'Jathing-Marhines. of which the following is a full, clear, and exaet speeifieatiou.
My inrention is eoneerned with soundreproduring machines. and more especially with a novel needle whieh is so eonstrurted as to he extremely durable.
To illustrate my invention. I annex hereto a sheet of drawing. in which the same ref (rent-e rhararters are used to designate identjirul parts in all the liililltF. ot' \\'l1i('ll-- Figure l i a side elevation ot' the sound hox ot a grarihuphone having my improved needle mounted therein:
Figv 2 is a detail of the same in ventral, vel'tiral section, on an enlaz' red stale; and
Fig. .i is a persi'iertire view of the needle iietaehed.
The needle 10 is eonstrneted ot a bar of ertxtalline material. surh as agate, emerald, garnet, ruhy. or of diamond. etiu, and is prefi-ralily triangular in oross set-lion and ot a size about equal to that of the well known liher needle. To produoe a plurality of points. I grind in one or both ends the eoniiniti s '11 \rhirh nla'y run into eaeh other, or -o nearl so as to Form on tilt'll i-nel three point 12. \\'l1ii"lt are preteralily made quite tine. and Whirh. lining; \'er hard. van he lei-d a \e2 i long time without material wear (I1 tltlttl tin ."Utidtl o1 tin. need e As ra t point is extremely durable with the three or x points: the ueedie run he uw l almost in delinitel without tic-in renewed or re ground. These points are blade-like in a vertival plane through them and alon; the line of the groove of a \"ii tor or (oiuinhia rmjordl thus enahlin: them to penetratr said grooves and eoiiperate as Fully with that type of a l'er'ord in an Ht'lliilillj steel needie.
T'o procure the greatest possible amount, of power from this needhu l serure Ullt end by the said sereu' Qt! as shown in Figs. 1 and in the needle-ria-eiririg aperture 13 in the bottom of the needle-arm t4, whit-h Speciflca ti'on of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, [918. Serial No. 324.
is suitably fulerumed in bearings 15 on the edge of the sound box 16, and has its upper end connected to the center of the diaphragm 17, in the customary manner. This gives a very loud tone.
In case a softer tone is required, any suitable mounting of the needle for muting the needle may be employed.
While I have shown and described mv in vention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purposes, it will he understood that it is eapalile of n'ioditieations and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the follrm'ing elaims except as ma be no ei'asitated by the state of the prior art.
What I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A needle for sound reproducing instruments which consists of a bar of crystalline material, polygonal in cross section, and having Made-like points on one end formed by Channels placed in the sides of the hill. said ehannels eommeneiing at some distance from the end of the lHll and increasing in depth and width to said end, the Width. depth and shape of the channels at the end being surh as to form on the end a figure eonsisting of radiating pointed portions with the tips of the pointed portions located at the edges of the ha r.
2. A needle for sound reprodueingiinstrumerits Whirh ronsists of a bar of crystalline material, having blade-like points on one end formed by vhanneh planed in the side of the liar. yaid ehannels eommenring at siifiie distance from the end of the bar and int-reusing in depth and width to said end the width. depth and shape ot the channels at the end lining sueh as to form on the end a tigrure ronsistin; of radiating: pointed portions.
in witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and aitix'ed my seal. this seventh day of Ueiwemher, A. D. 1911 ANTON It. RINIICLMAN.
