Description
F. 0. BERG.
TENT. APPLICATION-FILED AUG.20. 19H- Patented July 2, 1918.
FREDERICK 0. BERG, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
TENT,
readers.
Application filed August 20, 191'7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, FREDERICK O. BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of W ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tents, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in tents and particularly to the shield or closure for use around the pole or pipe support of the tent,
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a simple, durable, andeflicient means for closing the opening around the pipe or support to prevent the ingress of water or moisture during rains, and for keeping out other extraneous elements or objects.
In the accompanying drawings one of the complete embodiments of the invention is physically illustrated, constructed and arranged according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention, and the illustrated exemplification has proven highly satisfactory in actual service.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, showing the closure plate or shield applied to a tent pipe.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, top plan view of the shield or plate attached to the canvas top of the tent.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view at line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the plate or shield.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a portion of the shield.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention as exemplified in the drawings, a pipe 1 of standard type is shown to illustrate the application of the invention as now in actual use.
The upper wall of the pipe opening in the tent is defined by the line or edge 2, and the lower edge of the opening is defined or indicated by the dotted line 3, and through this opening the pipe 1 passes as illustrated.
The invention contemplates a simple but effective closure for this opening or space about the pipe, and a shield or plate 4 is provided to accomplish this purpose. Preferably the shield is made of thin sheet metal, and provided with an integral collar 5 spun or pressed up from the body of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2., little Serial No. 187,287.
shield. The walls of the collar are fashioned to project from body of the shield or plate in such manner as to conform to the periphery of the pipe and the obliquity or slant of the tent top, and in the present instance the shield or closure plate, although located in an incline plane, has its collar turned up and is adapted to fit around the vertical cylindrical walls of the pipe.
Two pockets, 6 and 7 are stitched along the outside edges of the pipe opening in the tent top, and these pockets are provided with openings 8, 8, to register with the openings 9, 9, spaced at intervals along the side edges of the closure plate or shield, and thesetwo sets of openings are adapted to receive and retain fastening devices by means of which the shield is held in place.
Preferably the shield is notched or cut away at its two upper corners 10, 10, to facilitate insertion of the upper end of the plate under the edge 2 of the wall of the pipe opening in the tent, but the lower edge of the plate is positioned on the outside of the wall or edge of the opening at its lower end, thus insuring drainage of water across the shield and preventing entrance of water to the interior of the tent.
An auxiliary closure is indicated at 11 and comprises a canvas flap or curtain, adapted to be rolled up in compact form and attached at the underside to the tent top above the slot or opening, and when not in use, it is tied up by the straps 12, 12, as illustrated. When the metal shield or closure plate is removed, these two straps may be unfastened, and the flexible closure or curtain unrolled, and inserted to take the place of the metal closure plate or shield, and is fastened in similar manner.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed herein is The combination with the tent top, and the tent pipe passing through an opening therein, of pockets fastened along the sides of the opening and a shield having cut away, upper corners with the upper edge adapted to fit under the edge of the upper wall of the opening, its sides incased in said pockets and secured thereto, and its lower edge overlapping the edge of the lower wall of said opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FREDERTCK O. BERG.
