G. C. JENSEN. EOCKING UNIT FOR LEVERS.
APPLICATION FILED r:a.|a.|91a.

WITNESS- INV 'NTOR. fiw Bfiw A TTORNE YS.
its upper en GEORGE C. JENSEN, 0F OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
LOCKING UNIT FOR mavens.
Y '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. JENSEN, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in Looking Units for Levers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction for lever and has for its principal objects to provide a mechanism including a member provided with a slot within which the lever moves during the operation thereof, and to provide means for reducing the area of said slot by bringing the side walls thereof into contact with the lever, whereby the lever is locked from movement and also is locked from removal from its fulcrum point. Another' object is .to provide a construction of this type which is capable of detachably securing to a lever casing and one whe'reinthe "lever is manually locked from movement and is capable of being released on the operation of a keycontrol'led mechanism.
lVith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointedout in the clainishereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from, the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention,
reference is directed to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the preferred embodiment of 'my invention applied to a lever fulcrumed for universal movement.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on. line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line I 44 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a suitable tubular su-p ort formed with a recess 2 at ii in which is received the spheri-. cal portion 3 of a lever 4, the lower end 5 of the lever extending within the tubular support, as in the drawing. The support I Specification o1 LettersIatent.

Patented July 2, 1918.
rests on a suitable base 6, and a ring 7 surrounding the lever and secured to the support -1'through the threaded connection 8,
maintains the lever fulcrumed therein. .If
desirable, a suitable packing 9 may be inte'rposed between the ring .7 and the spherical portion 3, and a suitable cup 10 may be positioned on the lever to exclude dust and grit from entering the fulcrum portion thereof.
The lower portion 5 of the lever is pro vided at spaced intervals with collars or stops 11, and the portion of said lever between, said collars or projections is adapted for operating in a slot 12 formed within the locking bolt or member 13, axially rotatable in a casing 14 which is detachably secured to the housing 1 through a threaded opening 15.
The inner cylindrical end 16 of said look .ing bolt or member 13 has geared connec- .21 formed in the casing 14, at one side of said member 18.
Said bore 20 carries a sp'rifgpressed latch member 22 formed with a recess 23 in which extends an offset finger 24 depending from the rotatable key Controlled locking barrel 25.
Themember 18 is 'rotated'within the bore or channel 19 .to position the end of the latch 22 to be received in the cooperating recess 21 by a suitable .handle26 extending through anopening 27. in the casing wall 14.
On the release of said latch 22 through the-operation of the key controlled barrel 25, a coiledspring 28 secured at one end to the casing wall 14 and at its opposite end to the bolt operating member 18, rotates said bolt, to cause said slot 12 to lie in a horizontal plane, as in dotted lines Fig. 3 of thedrawings and enables the free movement of the lever on its fulcrum.
bolt or member 13, due to the operation of the handle 26, the working area of the slot .12 is reduced and the side walls 12 thereof are forced into contact with the opposite sides of the lower ortion 5 of the lever intermediate said co lure or pro ections 11,
and said lever is receivable in suitable recesses 11 in said side walls 12, which pre vents movement of the lever longitudinally of the slot.
A suitable headed threaded member. 29 is positioned within the bore 21 and the head portion thereof overlies the cylindrical portion 16 of the member 13 and main tains the same in its seat.
If desirable, a suitable plate 30 may be positioned to protect the key controlled locking barrel 25.
Having thus described my invention what 'I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a support having a shift lever mounted therein for swinging movement, a member formed with a slot providing a pair of arms between which said lever operates, means for reducing the working area of said slot to lock said lever from movement by rotating said member to move said arms toward said lever, and lock controlled means for retaining said arms in their latter position. 1 Y
2. In combination with a tubular support having a shift lever mounted therein for swinging movement, an axially rotatable locking bolt or member extending into said support and provided with an elongated slot within which said lever operates, said member capable of axial rotation to reduce the working area of said slot by moving the side walls of said slot toward said lever, and lock controlled means for controlling the operation of said member.
3. In combination with a tubular support having a shift lever mounted therein for swinging movement, a locking member extended into said support at substantially right angles to said lever and provided with an elongated slot within which said lever operates, means for axially moving said member to reduce the working area of said slot to lock said lever from movement by moving the side walls thereof toward said lever. H
4. In combination with a tubular support having a shift lever removably mounted therein for universal swinging movement, said lever provided at a point within said support with a pair of spaced stops, a looking member extending into said support and provided with an elongated slot within which said lever operates intermediate said stops, and lock controlled means for axially rotating said lockin' member to reduce the working area of sai slot to lock said lever from movement or removal from its socket by moving the side walls of said slot toward said lever intermediate said stops.
5. In combination with a tubular support having a shift lever removably mounted therein for universal swinging movement, said lever provided at a point within said housing-with a stop, and a locking member carried by the housing and extending thereinto, said member provided with an elongated slot within which said lever operates, said member adapted for movement to reduce the working area of said slot by moving the side walls thereof toward'said lever above said stop to lock said lever from movement in or removal from its socket.
6. In combination with a tubular support having a shift lever removably mounted therein for universal swinging movement, said lever provided at a point within said housing with a stop, a locking member carried by the housing and extending thereinto, said member provided with an elongated slot within which said lever operates, said locking member adapted for movement to reduce the working area of said slot by moving the side walls thereof toward said lever above said stop to lock said lever from movement or removal from its socket, and lock controlled means for controlling the movement of said member.
7 In combination with a support having a shifter device movably mounted therein, a member formed with integral arms providing an elongated slot within which said device operates, means for reducing the working area of said slot to lock said device from movement by moving said arms into contact with opposite sides of said device in difi'erent planes within the length thereof, and lock controlled means for retaining said arms in their latter position.
8. In combination with a support having a shift lever mounted therein for swinging movement, a member formed with a pair of integral arms providing an elongated slot within which said leveroperates, means for reducing the working area of said slot to lock said lever from movement by bringing said arms intocontact with said lever in different horizontal planes, and lock controlled means for retaining said arms in their latter position.
In testimony whereof. I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE C. JENSEN.
