Patented June 25, 1918.
Application filed January 12, 1918. Serial No. 211,841.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN D. JoNrzs, a citizen of the United States. residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chairs. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding seats and has relation more particularly to a portable detachable attachment to the back 0 to support a child therein.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character wherein the back frame of the seat is so constructed to permit a hanger being removably and adjust-ably connected therewith, whereby the seat may be supported on a chair back at various adjusted positions as the occasion may demand.
A further object of my invention is the provision, of means for holding the seat 'in suspended supporting position and in suspenliled collapsed position upon the chair The invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the seat in supporting position and illustrated as supported on a. chair back.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view similar 1 showing the seat in folded position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through to Fig.
, the seat and chair.
Fig. 4 is a bottom folded position; and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the chair back with the seat supported thereon and illustrating a portion of the seat as broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 denotes a portable seat, including a support 6 constructed of a U-shaped wire bottom frame 7, a U-shaped wire rear frame 8 and a U-shaped wire front frame 9. The limbs 10 of the bottom frame are terminally formed with eyes. 11, and the connecting por tion 12 of the bottom frame 7 is formed with a series of depressions 13. The bottom frame 7 is also constructed of a series of longitudinal strands 14, each of which being plan view of the seat in childs seat ada ted for a chair 19 which alines transverselv with a terminally connected at one end with the limbs 10 of the bottom frame, and the said strands being formed at their opposite ends with inwardly bent. ends 15. The eyes 11 receive the connectin portion 16 of the rear frame 8 for hingedfv connecting the rear frame to the bottom frame. The longitudinally disposed connecting strands in this particular instance are constructed of wire and are disposed in spaced parallel relation to the limbs 10 of the bottom frame 7 and comprises a pair of outer strands 17 and an intermediate strand 18. The intermediate connecting strand 18 is looped at a point. adjacent its point of connection with the connecting portion of the bottom frame. to provide a diagonally disposed bearing eye )air of bearing eyes 20 formed in the limb; 10 of the frame 7 and the former and latter mentioned bearing eyes receive the connecting portion 21 of the front. frame 9 for hingcdly supporting the front frame to the bottom frame. The connecting portion 21 of the front frame 8 at points adjacent the limbs 22 thereof are upstruck as at 23 to provide the connecting portion 21 of the front frame with a pair of transversely alined gripping portions 24 adapted to bind against the outermost connecting strands 18 when the front frame is rocked to an open position and thereby preventing any accident-a1 folding of the respective front and rear frames on the support when the seat is in use. The seat 27'is also retained in supported position by means of the flattened terminal portion 28 of the inwardly bent ends 15 of the connecting strands.
The limbs 29 of the rear frame are of a reater length than the limbs 22 of the front frame and are terminally connected to one another by means of foldable braces 30. The braces 30 are also constructed of wire and are terminal] connected in the e es 31 of the limbs of t e rear frame and 1n the eyes 32 of the limbs of the front frame. This foldable seat 5 is adapted for detachable engagement with the back of the chair, as clearly shown in the drawing, and in order to do so I employ a hanger 33 which is also constructed of a single strand of wire and is of substantially U-shaped configuration The terminals of the limbs 34 of the I hanger are formed with hooked ends 35 and adapted to detachably engage in the eyes 31 of the limbs of the rear frame, when the seat the eyes 31 for a vertical sliding movement,
whereby when it is desired to raisethe seat to various heights with respect to the chair back, the hooked ends 35 of the hanger are disengaged by the eyes 31 and inserted in a further series of vertically disposed eyes 36. The vertically disposed eyes 36 are alined one with the other and formed throughout portions of the length of the limbs 29 of the rear frame by bending the limbs outwardly. The connecting portion 37 of the hanger 33 is depressed and offset rearwardly of the hanger as at 38 to form the hanger with inverted U-shaped hooks 39 adapted to straddle the upper edge of the chair back. The connectin portion of the hanger 33 is of a yieldab e nature and adapted to yieldingly bind against the rear faces of the back of the chair when the seat is in applied position, thereby preventing any accidental displacement of the seat from the chair back. In order to prevent the marring of the upper edge of the chair and atpoints of-engagement of the. hanger with the chair back, I provide protectors 40 which are composed of rubber or the like material.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparcut to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such advantages may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended thereto.
the limbs of Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is 2-- 1. ,A foldable seat comprising a support including a bottom frame, a rear frame and a front frame, a brace terminally connecting the front frame with the rear frame, means for supporting the frame 11 on a chair back,
and means formedintegra with the front frame and adapted to bind against portions of the bottom frame for holding the seat in supportin position.
2. A f0 dable seat comprising a support including a bottom, rear and front frames, a brace terminally connected to the terminals of the front and rear frames, a hanger, and means formed integral with the rear frame for detachably and slidably receiving the hanger and adapting the hanger to be connected thereto for supporting the seat in suspended position upon a chair back.
3. A foldable childs seat adapted for connection with a chair back comprising a support including a plurality. of frames, one of said frames being of substantially U- shaped configuration, the limbs of the latter mentioned frame being provided with a series of laterally extendin eyes, and a hanger removably and adjusta 1y engaging with said eyes.
At. A foldable childs seat including a plurality of members, a brace terminally connected with a pair of said members, and means formed lntegral with one of said members adapted to bind against any of said members upon the adjustment of the seat in one direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
