Be it vknown that I, FREDRIK WILKEN- soN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Gottenborg, in the county of Grottenborg and Bohus and Kingdom of Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to improvements in picture frames and has for its object to provide simple and easily operated means for the insertion of the glass, the picture and the backing of same. Another object of my said invention is to give the rear side of the frame a neat appearance when the picture and backing are in place. A further object is to secure a good binding eect around the margin of the backing to` prevent dust from entering between the glass and the picture and thus injuring the appearance of the latter.

In carrying my invention into e'ect I provide the rails from which the frames are to be built up with grooves in the face of the ordinary` recess in which the glass and picture usually are positioned. The'groove in each instance runs along the whole rail or, when the rails are embodied in the construction of a frame, around all the sides of this frame; viz., if a rectangular frame, along the two side rails as well as along the upper and the lower rail, or, if an oval or a round frame, around the whole oval or margin. This groove I position in the recess mentioned, so that between the ordinary flange of the frame rail, which serves as the usual .front seat for the glass and picture, and the adjacent wall of the groove there is left a space of the same width as the over all thickness of the glass and the picture. 'Ihe groove proper'I give the same width as the thickness of the backing as used, and thus the backing when inserted in the groove will keep the glass and picture firmly bound between the said flange of the rail and the backing.

The frame rail a, is asusual provided with a recess b in which the glass c and picture d, when the rails are embodied in the construction of a frame, are positioned as ordinarily, whereby a ange f on the front of the rails serves as a seat for these parts. In the perpendicular face of the recess there is proportion of frame shown in cross y vided a groove e running along the rail at such a distance from the flange f as corresponds to the over all thickness of glass@ and picture d'. The dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate clearly the manner in which this groove extends along all the sides of the frame. The width of the groove e corresponds to the thickness of the backing y, so that this can be positioned therein as shown clearly in Fig. l, thereby locking the glass and picture in the recess I). Though I do not claim a particular method of inserting the backing in the groove e, I want to illustrate various means for the purpose in order to demonstrate the employment of my invention clearly. As shown in Fig. 2, the back board piece is of somewhat the same size as the figure outlined by the bottom of the all round groove e. To permit insertion of this form of backing in the frame, I provide the latter with notches It leading through its rear surface down to the groove and through which notches the back board g can be slid in as shown in Fig.

I repeat that I do not claim either of the illustrated methods of inserting the backing nor any other such method, but they are shown and described to facilitate the understanding of the invention proper as limited in the following claim.

I am aware, that it is not new to provide picture frames or their rails with grooves for attaching the backing instead of by means of tacks and nails, but I understand, that it has never before been known by anybody else to arrange these parts in the manner here described and shown.
