Description

F. W. SYRED.
EXPANDING TABLE. APPLICATION-:ULEB JULY23|19$7.
Eatented June 25, 1918.
i l use y 'FRAN-K marianista-Ensor HIGH wYooiyiBn, ENGLAND.
To all/whom I? may Concern:Y
Be fi' known that "I, FRANK lrLnr-AM SYRED, a subjectvof the lIiing of Great 'Brit-` ain and Ireland, lresidingrat High WVyco1nbe, in the .county of Buckingham, MEngland, have invented certain new and useful "Iniprovenients in ExpandingTables; and I Udo hereby declare the following Eto; be a full; clear, `a nd exact description `of theiinventiom .such las will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to niakelaiid'usej the same. t l t l y This invention relates to expanding tables andhas foi-"its object to so construct a "table A0f the class in question that a loose leafor flap is automatically raised, yso "that it comes level or flush with the' tabletop gproper, by vsimply pulling the two enc'lsfof the said top outward, whileby reversing the process, the flap 1s` caused to pass down, into -a place formed for its reception yunderneath the table topwproper.: i l p `And ini-order that my said inventionmay be clearly under-'stood7 FI will desc'ribe the same with referenceto thedrawnig acco1n- Fig. 6 is an end elevation and partsec'tionf. the section being taken 1n a vertical plane through the center of Fig. l at the place where the top members a and 1.1. come into contact.
The same letters of lreterence are ein ployed to denote the same parts in all the views.
a and 1.1 are the top portions of the table, which are provided along each side with slides l) having rabbets corresponding with grooves in the legs h and side rails g see Figs. 5 and 6. Attached to the underside of the portion a of the table top are the ends of two sliding pieces or runners c. These runners are supported and guided upon a bridge d under the opposite end al. of the table. Eachfoflthe runners 0 is' provided p witha` eut away ,portion or' l,'suiiicient size lto enable thefiap `@"to rest in 'thesameywhen lying beneath'thetop olithe'ztable` l` i Each-of "the `side trails Ig has also a corresponding `portion 7' cutv away for "the saine purpose. t t t "Theife'ndjof each of the rrunners @remote tro1n"th'e"topdfis'formed with beveledor `sloping portions `and the'irunners c are oitl such dirnensionsthatwhen; the top a ofthe `table.isfpullfed vout the slopingjportions of the runners come `beneath the "loose l'eaf and raise oneside 'thereof to a level with the top'oiffthe table# The lends""f`the cut awziy recesses fin" the i Siderails g are also "sloped or beveledotf at 7', such' bevelsfaerngthe bevels Zon the 4runners c for the purposes hereniafter `inentionecL4 areblocks attached *tothe-under- A side oftheleaf c to prevent lateraldisplace ment of thesaid'leaf. f "A 'y t The" operation :of raising an dlo\`vering` the leaf e -will. fbeffreadi'ly understood.
"In order tof 'extend the ytable "the *portion all ofthe topispulledin anoutward dii-ection until it comesI into'the position shown` at Fig. 3,"suitable stops 4being provided )for `preventingit `being pulledtoo tan Lf'llhen the otherportion Vof the top 1s pulled out inthesame'inannerf "This movement brings the "runners -c into action, causing lthe tiap e 'to 2be raised fbyi'thebevelsf las showui at Figi `-.t`the1`sa1ne itime, itwill "be observed `lthat ther-bevels *f fon the side 'rails `g are uncovered. 'The top aslgi-stnow pushed inward causing tlielleaf *to epass iup the `bevels 1f thus bringing l"it`le'vl wi-th the topl of the table t as shown yat Fig. 5.
Bythese n'i'ovein'en'ts 'of 'the two Vportions of the table top, the extended table is ready for use.
In order to close the table, the portion a of the table top is pushed inward.
This moves the Hap e until it passes down the slide j and on continuing the motion, the runners c pass under the top al. and the leaf e slides slowly down the bevels 'i into the level beneath the table. The other portion n.1. of the top is then pushed inward until the parts return to the position shown at F ig. 1. t
It will be understood that the particular method of carrying out the invention just described is given merely by way of example, as the construction may be varied within the-scope of the appended :claims without departing from the principle of my said invention.
What I claimand desire to secure by' Let-y ters Patent of the United States of Amer-i 1. In an expanding table, the combination.'
brought together or separated, meansf for limiting the sliding action ofthe said ysections, a'loose leaf, a recess inthe -sidey rails of sufficient size to enablethe loose leafto rest within the same andto come belowthe l i. sectionaltop of the table, runners attached at one end to one ofthe sections of the top,
means beneathI the other section the top for supporting the said runners, yrecessesin "the saidrunners, to ,receive the :additional leaf and to allow it to restbeneath the sectionaltop of the table, inclinedl surface'sat the ends ofthe cut away portionsof the `runnersremote from Athetop section to which the said runners are attached, andfinclined l lsurfaces to the cut away portions of the side rails facing in an oppositev direction to the inclines onthe cut away portions on the runners, 'all for the purposes.setfforth. 'i 2. In anjeXpanding-table, the combination e of a frame carried yby thelegs, Asideirails to 7 the said'frame, a top :divided'rint-o two sections, rabbeted plortions coming below ,i the two sections of t eftop, grooves in the side rails-andthe legs for the receptionof the I saidzrabbeted-portions lfor enabling the Asec- Y ,-tions of the top to be brought together or separated, means for limiting .the sliding action of the said sections, a loose leaf, a recess in the side rails of 'suliicient sizeto enable the loose leaf to `rest within the :same
and to come below the sectional top of the table, runners attached at onel endjto one of the sections of the top, a bridge beneath the other section of the top for supporting copies of this patient may .betbtalned for v and guiding said runners, recesses in the said runners to receive the additional leaf and .to allow it to rest beneath the sectional top of the table, inclined surfaces at the ends of the cut away portions of the runners remote from the top section to which the said runners are attached, and inclined surfaces tothe cut away portions of the side rails facing in an opposite direction to the inclined surfaces on the cut away portions on the runners, all for the purposes set forth. 3. In an expanding table, the combination of a frame carried by the legs, side rails to thesaid frame, a top divided into two sections, rabbeted portions coming below the two sect-ions of the top, grooves in the side rails andthe legs for the reception of the said rabbeted portions for enabling the sections of the top to be brought together or separated, means for limiting the sliding action of the said sections, a loose leaf, a recess in the side rails of sufficient size, to enable the loose leaf to rest within the same and to come below the sectional top of the table, runners attached at one end to one of the sections of the top, a bridge beneath the other section of the top for supporting and guiding the said runners, recesses in the said runners to receive the additional leaf and to allow it to rest beneath the sectional top of thetable, inclined surfaces at the ends of the cut away portions of the runners remote from the top section to which said runners are attached, and inclined surfaces to the cut away portions of the side rails facing in an-opposite direction to the inclined surfaces on the cut away portions on the runners, and means beneath the loose leaf'for preventing the lateral displacement therof, all substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In witness wherof I have hereunto affixed my signaturethis 29th day of June 1917.
