GAS-BURNING HEATER.
Leeann Toall whom it may concern: 7 I 7 .Be it known that I, Louis C. BADER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burning 7 Heaters, of which thefollowing is a speci- My invention relates to improvements in gas burning heaters designed for use particularly in connection with sad irons.
. The object of this invention is the pro duction of adevice of the character mentioned in which the control of fuel to the burners of the heater and the lighting of the burners will be automatically controlled. A further object is the production of a heater which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The inventlon consists in the combmations and arrangements ofparts hereinafter described and claimed.
,flhe inventionwill be best understood by reference to the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a partially sectional plan view of a heater embodying the invention, Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse section of the heater, and c Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail section taken through the oontiguously tions of the burners of the heater.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a rectangular frame orbody 1 in the top of which is formed a rectangular opening 2. Removably mounted in the opening 2 is a supporting plate 3 which is formed with two openings 4 of oval or elongated forma tion. Arranged in each opening 4 is a spider or supporting frame 5, the outwardly projecting fingers of the spiders 5 resting upon the upper side of plate 3 for support. Arranged directly below each of the openings 4t is a burner 6 of corresponding formation having fuel outlet openings at its upper side. The burners 6 are connected through pipes 7 with'a pipe 8 provided at the rear of frame 1, the pipe 8, in turn being adapted for connection with a hose or 'diate its end as ber .15. The rearward end of each ly' understood.

supply pipe 9. The "supply of the gas to the heater is controlled by a valve 10.
Interposed in each pipe 7 for the control of thesupply of gas therethrough, to the corresponding burner. 6 is a valve 11 having an oscillatory operating arm orhandle 12. Cooperatingwith each of the valve arms 12 is a lever 13 which is fulcrumed intermeat 14 to a supporting memlever 13 is bent upwardly, the same being adapted to normally'project above the correspond- 1ng supporting frame 5, so that upon the placing of a sad iron upon the supporting frame, said end of the lever will be engaged and depressed in order to effect opening of the corresponding valve 11 as will be read- The upper end of each lever 13,.is provided with an inclined plate a 17 for engagement with the iron in sliding the same to position upon the supporting hold the lever in position as shown in Fig.
2, that is, with the rearward end thereof projecting above the supporting member and consequently with the valve 11 in closed position.
Formed at the adjacent sides of the burner 6 arelaterally projectingextensions 18 which terminate in close proximity with each other, said extensions being provided with fuel outlet slots 19 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. i
In using the heater, posed to use two irons, one being in use while the other is being heated. Gas will be supplied only to the burner above which the iron is arranged, the valve 11 of the the ironer is supother burner being normally held in closed position.
the valve and the escaping gas will be a with, since, with ignited or lighted by of gas. through the which extends into-close proximity with the reason of theescaping flame supported by the gas escaping from the slot. 19. of the other burner. The heated iron will then be removed, the corresponding burner being automatically extinguished as above mentioned. Thus it will be seen that but one burner will be in use at all times the 'two' burners being alternately in use. as the irons are duringthe ironing operation,
alternately used. I 7
Through the employment of the slotted portions 18, the necessity of providing sep. arate or additional means for supporting'a pilot 1 light for each burner is done away this arrangement, each burner serves asa ,pilot for the other, the
location of the slots '19 inclose proximity with each other insuring instant lighting of the burners in the operation of the device. The slots .19 will be narrow or restricted so that only a smallquantity of fuel will be permitted to pass therethro-ugh forthe support of a comparatively low flame.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish tobe limited to the precise details of constructionset' forth, but desire to availmyself of such variations and modifications'as come within the scope of the appended claims. 1 y
slot 19 of. the. burner,
, Patent is burners arranged below said .cooperating; with said burners to control the supply of gasthereto; laterally project- IIaving described my invention what I clainias' new and desire to secure by Letters '1. Ina gas burningheater, the combination'of a supporting/frame; a plurality of burners arranged below said frame; valves cooperating with said burners to control the supply of gas thereto; contiguously positioned portions on said burners having adjac'ently' positioned fuel outletiopenings; and 1a valve-operating member cooperating with each of said valves and normally pro- .jecting above said supporting frame, substantially as'des'c'ribed. I
2.. In" a gas burning heater, the combination'of a supporting frame; a plurality of ing portions on said burners projecting from the bodies thereof terminating in close proximity with each other and having adj acently ositioned elongated comparatively narrow fuel outlet slots; and a valve-operating member cooperating with eachof said valves and normally projecting above said supporting frame, substantially as described;
In testimony whereof I' have signedmy name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
