Byersfin the county ofClay and tate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Quick- Adjusting Wrenches, of which the following is a speci- "fication:
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches of" the quiclnaction form, and hasfor one of its objects to si mplify and improve theconstruction andincrease the efliclency; and itillty of devices of this character.
'Another object of the invention is to" provide a device of this character in which provision is made for instantly releasing or locking the movable jaw in place relative to the stationary jaw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a locking lever having a cam face for applying pressure to hold the sleeve in locking relation to the stock, and combined yielding means for holding the locking means to control the movements of the locking lever.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved implement with the parts in locked relation.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the combined movable jaw and sleeve in section and the locking lever in open or released position.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the part shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents the clip device with the parts separated.
The improved wrench comprises a stock 10 having a plurality of ratchet teeth 11 on one edge, a stationary jaw 12 at one end and a solid handle 13 at the other end, the stock and its handle and the stationary jaw being preferably cast in one piece. Slidably disposed upon the stock is an opposing or movable jaw 14 and having a sleeve portion 15 likewise slidably engaging the stock. Pivotedat 20between' the side walls of the sleeve is a locking lever, indicated as a whole-at21, and extending toaposition opposite the handle 13, so that the same hand which clasps' theha'nd'le may likewise clasp the lever. The locking lever includes a cam face 22 at the side next to the stock and a stop recess 23 at the side opposite to the cam face. By this arrangement it will be obvious that when the lever 21 is moved toward the stock 10 and the handle 13, the cam face 22 will engage the adjacent face of the stock and cause the knife edge 18 of the stop 17 to engage with the adjacent tooth 11, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus firmly lock the sleeve and its jaw 14: in position upon the stock.
Bearing upon one face of the sleeve is a clip device including a base portion 24 having limiting ribs 25 and a bearing plate 26. Disposed between the ribs 25 and bearing upon the base 24; are a plurality of superposed resilient holding members 27. The plate 26 is disposed externally of the hold ing members 27 and between the stop ribs 25, and all of the parts retained in position by a fastening screw or like device 28 which passes through the members 26, 27 and 24 and into the body of the sleeve as shown more particularly in Fig. 2. At their free ends the members 27 are curved slightly toward and normally engage the adjacent face of the lever 21, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus maintain the cam face 22 normally in its locking relation to the stock 10 and holding the stop 17 in looking relations with the teeth of the stock. At their free ends the members 27 are designed to engage in the stop recess 23 when the lever 21 is disposed 5 may be provided with pipe or rod-engaging teeth 31, if preferred, to enable the implement to be adapted as apipe or rod wrench.
The improved implement is simple in con-- struction, can be constructed of any required size or of any suitablematerial.
When once locked in position the movable jaw and its sleeve are so firmly held in place that they will not yield under strain and thus cause a nut to be wedged between the u aws. The jaw 14 and its sleeve and attach ments may be readily-detached by removing the holding pin 30 and slipping the handle 13 from the stock and the handle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A wrench comprising a stock having a plurality of teeth and a rigid jaw, a sleeve slidable upon the stock and having an opposing jaw, stop carried by the sleeve and engageable with the teeth, a lock lever pivoted in the sleeve and including a lock recess and a cam face adapted to move the sleeve laterally to cause the stop to engage one'of the teeth, a clip device including a base member having side ribs and a clamp member, a plurality of resilient memberssuperposed between the base member and its ribs and engaged by the clamp member, and a fastening device operating through the clamp member, resilient members and the base and into the sleeve, said resilientmembers adapted to normally maintain the cam face in engagement with the stock and to engage in thelock recess and limit the out- -wardm0vementof the lever a I In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
