' FENCE-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 11116 11, 1918 Application filed February 1, 1917. Serial N 0. 145,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ARTHUR FERRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Gates, of which thefollowing is a pecification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates, especially for farm service, of which the following is a complete description, reference being'had to the'accompanying drawings making which Figure 1 is a side view, showing the gate raised in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a to plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sit e view of the cam disk.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section through said. disk.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the lever clamp.
F1g. 6 1s a slde view of one of the cam plates.
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view through one of the connections between the bars and the battens.
Fig. 8 is an outer side view of the hand lever clamp showing its lever 0 held in place by a guard bar X.
Fig. 9 is a plan of the catch spring for the hand lever clamp.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As the gate is particularly intended for farm service, the frame is preferably made of wood, and comprises a number of vertical battens, o, a), 4L, 4:, that support and are pivoted to horizontal bars 0, by bolts 6, passing through the said members, at their intersections.
At each intersecting joint of the vertical battens with the horizontal bars 0, are inserted in the bolt holes of said horizontal bars, flanged metal ferrules Z, to prevent friction in wet weather. Pivot bolts 6 pass through said ferrules Z and bolt holes and pivot said joints as shown in Fig. 1.
The gate braces, d, are pivoted to the rear end of the gate at the top through the vertical battens '0, and top horizontal bar, and reach down diagonally on each side of said gate, spanning the horizontal bars 0, and are loosely inserted into a lever clamp, and can be firmly clamped to the adjacent vertipart of this specification, in
cal battens by movement hereafter described, and as shown inFig. 8, and by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The hand clamp of the gateconsists of a cam disk k, providedwith a hand lever 0,
said cam disk being formed with several seihispherical bosses i, on each side of the dis In close proximity to said disk A" are cam plates it, it that are formed with a series of circular inclined grooves 1", as shown in Fig. 6, adapted to receive the semispherical bosses 2', of the cam disk is, said bosses to travel from the lower to the higher plane in the circular inclined grooves 1", when being clamped. By such action the relative distance between the cam plates h and the said clamp plate j is reduced, as clamp plate j is connected to the cam plate It by bolts 92 as shown in Fig. 5, so that the diagonal braces (Z, are firmly clamped to the adjacent vertical battens u, and the horizontal bar connected therewith, as shown by the dotted lines representing said lever in Fig. 1 and the gate is thereby rigidly held parallel to the roadway or at any desired angle.
The hand lever 0, is held locked in its lowest position by a catch spring X, and the said lever 0 is freed from the catch spring X, by pressing back the free end of the catch spring.
The gate lock lever 10, is pivoted to one of the lower horizontal bars of the gate, and at the lower end of said lever is pivoted a wheel p, that slightly rolls upon the roadway toward the rear end when the lever clamp is unlocked and the rear end of the gate is raised, thereby preventing the front end of the gate from dragging on the roadway.
The lock lever to which said wheel is attached is in the position to the lock gate slats S S to be locked to post a, or unlocked, as may be desired by a back and forth sway of the lever and when locked the free end of the gate rests upon said wheel, as shown in Fig. 1.
The gate post 5, in conjunction with the vertical battens o are provided with vertically extended hinges 3 that are of a length that the gate can be lifted up, a distance sufficient to allow small stock (as sheep and hogs) to pass through, and to swing clear over deep snow.
of said lever 0, as
1. In combination withaniadjustab'legate,
a clamp comprising a cam disk provided with semlspherical bosses upon each side thereof, a handle extending thereironi, cam
pm-awn each side of said disk, said plates being provided with inclined circular grooves with which the bosses engage, a clamp plate spaced from the cam plates, and
bolts a connecting said plates substantially as described and shown.
2. .In combination withan adjustable gate,
,a pivoted lock lever having a wheel ,pivoted to its lower end and lock slats adjacent thereto operated by said lei'er, substantially as described and shown.
3. In combination withan adjustable gate,
duplicate extended hinges connected therewith to a gate post, in combination with a hand lever clamp as part of the gate frame iconsistingof ;a hand lever cam disk formed with three semispherical bosses projecting from each side of said cam disk, cam plates in proximity to each side of the hand lever cam disk and formed with inclined circular grooves, and the semispherieal bosses of the cam disk traveling in said grooves, and bolts connecting said cam ,plates with the clamp plate 9' so -as to clamp tie diagonal :braces,
the verticalbattens, and the horizontal members of ,the gate in flllXiliLPOSltlOll thereto firmly together, when the hand lever of said lever clamp is moved to its lowest position, substantially asshown and described.
